They are saying because of the immigration crack down that they've lost so many workers that they can't get their fruits harvested. Now could'nt that be taken as a admission of guilt that they've been hiring illeagal immigrants? and should'nt they get popped for it?

Not Till The Wages Go Up
Then Well Pick The Crops

Thats All Part Of It
Or Did You Convenienty Forget That Part Of It

The Citizens Are Stating Their Demands

If Those Growers Want That Product Picked
They WILL Raise The Wages
Or They'll Go Out Of Business
Due To A Competetive Foreign Market

Thats One Of The Citizens Demands, Remember?

Will Take The Unions Away From You

Your Product Wont Get To Market
And You'll Go Out Of Business
And Your COMPETITOR,
Who Is Abiding By The Hiring Laws
Will Profit By Your Loss

The immigration crackdown is having no effect on illegals. It is however causing a shortage of seasonal migrant workers for a variety of reasons. Farmers for the most part do not hire illegals. Farmers have used migrant temporary workers forever.
In the 1930's, during the depression, they were mostly white and black people from the mid-west who would migrate to Florida and California for the planting/harvest seasons. After the depression they were replaced by Mexican and Guatemalan workers. These are workers who go through the immigration system legally. The recent changes for immigration have only complicated the process, by adding miles of more red tape, of getting the needed workers across the border legitimately. Also these workers pay income taxes and spend money in the areas they work.

I suggest you stop listening to uneducated right wing zealots. Do a little historical research and stop lumping everyone into the "illegals" group you all seem to hate. Bye the way are any of the illegals threatening your job? Are you a dishwasher or hotel maid or ditch digger? Then shut up!!!

the way i see it most of the farming and vegies are gonna go down and here in ky the horse industry, you will not find an amercian that will do this kind of work homeless or not these farmers make big money off these people they are gonna lose everything cause no american is gonna work for 4.00 an hour sleep in a barn in the loft work fro dawn to dusk, shovel horse **** and give everything up and leave their familes to do this,Most homeless people can get a job why work when you get a roof over your head at shelters and social workers can help their with food and clothes, and people give them change it adds up.I knew a guy who stayed on the street of lexington ky for 1 week,at night he went to the shelter,to sleep and eat durning the day he sat on a bucket and had a jar put money in it got so full he put the money in the bucket,he did this for 1 week he made almost 7,000 whose the fool....

Yea. What gives? Growers should be able to hire farm workers from our own country. And farm workers should have portable health insurance policies that follow them as they go from one grower to another, harvesting crops as they ripen. Employers can't compete in a world economy if they bear the burden of health care and workers can't afford preventative care, ending up in emergency rooms when they get very sick.

I have to admit that this is not Bush's fault. And illegal immigration is not his fault. But things are definitely not better than they were six years ago.

Maybe they should try hiring teens. Isn't that why they made "summer break" in the first place? So the kids could help out with the harvest?

If you can't run your business without slave labor or the modern day equivalent, then maybe you shouldn't be in business.

Let's be perfectly honest here-- None of us are going to pick up any strawberries.

In the end if they pay more they'll loose profit-- It's more convient for them to hire illegals then us.

Yep ... exactly right ... and let their damn berries rot ... pay properly, and they'll get picked ... all this nonsense about illegals is bull anyway ... how do berries get picked in other countries? The US is not the only country growing strawberries ... and somehow they manage to get picked in countries with few or no illegals ... go figure ... :)

You know what? Serves them right! If they had been hiring Americans to begin with, all would be well. There are MANY kids and other people who are legal here that would help out.

DEPORT ILLEGALS

AGAIN AND I HAVE TOLD THEM THIS ALREADY

WHO THE HELL ARE THEY THAT WE SHOULD BAIL THEM OUT BECAUSE THEY ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM WITH ILLEGALS - IF THEY CAN'T HIRE AMERICANS THEY DON'T NEED TO BE IN BUSINESS - FOR SUPPORTING THE OUTSOURCING OF JOBS THEY SHOULD KNOW WHAT IT'S LIKE TO GO OUT OF BUSINESS AND BE OUTSOURCED - WE OWE THEM NOTHING THEY HAVE NOT STOOD UP FOR AMERICA AND THE CONSTITUTION AND I HAVE NO SYMPATHY FOR THEM.

DON'T GIVE ME THE BS ABOUT LETTUCE BEING $45 A HEAD YOU THINK YOU KNOW WHO YOUR TALKING TOO BUT DON'T. AND YOU BET I AM RED BECAUSE THEY WOULDN'T HIRE ME EVEN AT THEIR WAGES SO SAVE IT.
