If you keep your house clean and flea free along with your dog, you could suspend treatment during the winter months. Most fleas in houses are brought in from the outside on pets or even people. Fleas don't hatch during the winter so if the house is clean there is no source to get fleas. Well, I guess you or your pets could get them from somebody else's house. Are your friends and relatives good housekeepers? : )
I would recommend Advantage or Frontline, and there is nothing wrong with treating year round. It's good prevention.

Because Michigan weather changes so drastically, even in seasons when it shouldn't be happening, it doesn't take much for the fleas to come out. In our grooming salon, when we had our little heat wave this past February, we had so many flea outbreaks. Because you never know what the weather is going to do, keep on treatment all year round. It's cheaper and easier than having to bomb the house and take care of a flea outbreak.

No matter where you live, your dog needs flea/tick and heart worm medicine every month of the year. The flea/tick Frontline also prevents worms and other parasites from entering your dog.
The heart worm med should be given year round because your dog can get heart worms year round. And it is a tragic death if a dog is stricken with it. It is very costly to treat it too.
Why take the chance when it can mean your dog's health and well being?

My vet says until the first couple freezes...which in MI can be Nov or Dec until maybe about March. But mostly it depends on the fleas in your specific areas. if your neighbors havea dog as k them what they do or if they have ever had a flea problem. Same goes for heart worm meds.

I live in Northern Indiana. My vet has my dog on Advantage once a month all year long. He told me that fleas dont actually die off in the winter. Hope this helps.

i live in a similar climate (northern illinois) and have reduced our pet's flea treatment to about zero, because they are not exposed to other mammals that carry fleas. our cat never goes outside, and our dogs have limited access outdoors as we have an invisible fence. it depends on where you live (country, suburban, city?) as to how you treat. vets are all about treating year round, but i'm not certain that it's necessary in all cases. we've never had a flea issue in our current home (suburban) but in the past have had to deal with it. best of luck in how you handle your situation!!
