I just started working on an elliptical trainer, and can only do 7-10 minutes before feeling like I'm going to die. Can I do 3 ten minute session throughout the day instead of 1 thirty minute session and still get good results? thanks.
ps. 10 year old son likes to use the elliptical too- any problem with this?

Normally, breaking a workout up is into different parts of the day is good.

Not starting out, though and not your cardio workout.

Work yourself up to 30 minutes. Don't kill yourself. Here's a general outline:

Week 1: 7-10 minutes
2: 10 minutes
3:11-12 minutes
4: 13-14 minutes
5: 15-16 minutes
6: 18 minutes.

By week 7 you'll have double your minutes. For cardio, you want to average about every other day for at least 20 minutes. Otherwise, it is not cardio. You may burn some calories here and there, but it is doing nothing for your heart. So work yourself up to 20 minutes and go from there! Then you can either go a little further/faster or a little longer. Just keep striving to improve.

Check w/ your doctor and learn the machine(read the manual), too.

Most importantly, have fun! you won't do it for long if you are not having fun!

Problems on both accounts.
First, you are stressing out your body to much by doing three separate exercises a day. Your body needs time to recover from the physical stress of a workout. If you put that much pressure into your body, your muscles will not grow and/or strengthen. (If they do, VERY little) It can also cause you to be more tired than usual. Do the best you can with one workout a day, the results will be much better.
With your son, he is to young for exercise machines. Muscles constrict when exercising and at that age it will stunt his growth. He will not be able to grow to his peak, and maybe it sounds like a good idea now to let him get stronger, he will not be to happy when he is 16 or 17 and one of the smaller guys in his class. I also think it is bad for testosterone levels at his age. Making him more aggressive, he could start fights at school or want to be sexually active at a younger age. (not 100 percent on that but pretty sure) Anyway, good luck with the exercise.

p.s. I know quite a bit about about this topic, I have went to the gym for about 7 years and spent alot of time online finding out everything there is to know about it.

Do only what you can - I think you need to read the manual and adjust your machine to where you can do 12 minutes, by the way. These things are adjustable, you know.

Anyway, do that for 2 weeks, three or four times a week. (Not every day). Then, add 2 minutes to your session for two more weeks, and so on until you're at the time recommended in your OWNER MANUAL!

Did I mention you should read the owner's manual??

you really should do the one session of cardio. when i was in college a friend and i would work out with a guy who was also a friend of ours and he played the personal trainer. the guy was tough, he didn't take it easy on us because we were girls who were jsut starting to work out. the first time we were on the eliptical, after the first 15 minutes we were ready to die but he made us finish the 30 minutes. when we did weightlifting, there was no cheating, he made us do all the reps and they all had to be full reps. he killed us but kept us motivated. try finding a friend that will go to the gym with you. don't watch the time...it makes it go by even slower....read or watch tv instead. goodluck to you
