I imagine it is for cost reasons. I know from my job that the bag is formed from a roll of plastic much like a roll of waxed paper and crimped on each end as the cereal is put in. The cost of the zipper strip is alot more then the cost of the bag, and takes special machines to do it. Some companies do not have the money to purchase the new machines or do not want to cut into profits to install them. But really is a good idea.

Excellent idea. Ironically, the cheaper bagged cereals do have reclosable zip locks. The first thing I do when I open a new box of cereal is put it in a zip bag.

That's a great idea, you are absolutely correct, it does seem a rather simple solution to a very long problem, may times I have tried to find ways to keep it fresh and now cereal seems so expensive its important to keep it fresh so you can enjoy all of the box. This is a great way to solve that problem and would eliminate separate containers, clips and whatnot to keep it fresh. Gold star for you =)

Those plastic bags cost less. I guess they figure that the cereal will be gone quickly anyway so why spend the extra bucks on resealable bags.

Cause if it gets stale you'll have to buy more! I've noticed that Chips Ahoy finally changed their packaging so you can re-seal it, but there's fewer cookies in the package now. You can always transfer the cereal into plastic containers and it'll last longer. See Tupperware.com.

well look at it like this.. zip-lock style bags cost more to produce. thus raising the price of your product, and also, if the cereal goes stale then the consumer has to go out and spend more money on your product..... good scheme huh?

It's probably a marketing ploy. You buy cereal, you don't eat it as quickly as you should.. you have to go back to the store and buy a new box. They make more money.

The only way they would is if one cereal company did it and saw increased sales as a result.

That would be too easy.

And then you wouldn't have to worry about dried fruit, nuts & bran flakes flying throughout the kitchen when you finally get the dang bag open.

Probably because it costs too much and cereal is expensive enough as it is.
