Dude, I hate to be the one to tell you this--but, jazz died about 30 years ago with the end of Monk's performaning career. You MIGHT find a job in Harlem if you can find a bar without a Black jazz musician but even then, you are looking at only a few dozen.

Consider a military career dude. Something like airborne. That sort of thing is the only options left to you. (DIdn't you have an career consultants at your college?)

Kudos to you for doing what you want. I'm not in music (I'm in theater) but I have some tips for you.

Do some research. There is almost always a book or website that could help you out. Also, find out the names and contact information of famous jazz musicians. Send them a letter/email asking for their advice. Who knows, they might reply.

Secondly, if you really want to go to NYC you're going to need a ton of determination and you're going to need to build a great resume. It takes a lot of time to get famous andn you're going to need a lot of detemination.

Good luck!

I was once a music major, just not jazz. I majored in classical music.

Ya gotta get some gigs, man. You could be like the cat who sings "Piano Man." Play in any dive, and when people start coming up to you, putting cash in your jar, and saying "Man, what are you doin' here?" then you will have arrived.
