might be a sexist thing... Who wants to be in Juliet company???
what a bunch of sissys???

But I do like the I J confusion theory pretty well too... though the official designation of units is always in capitol letters and Roman Script is the standard... I would think it would be difficult to confuse the two... but then again there are plenty of people in the military that can't tell the difference between a Bradley Fighting Vehicle and a BMP or a Blackhawk Helicopter and a Hind D...

The old phonetic alphabet had "J" as "Jig" which was a racial slur for black people. No soldier wanted to be in a "Jig" company. Another legend has it that at one time Benedict Arnold commanded J Company, thus dishonored that title. And another is that in old cursive writing I and J were the same. Remember the inscription above the Lord's head as He hung on the cross, INRI. That was actually JNRJ, for Jesus of Nazareth, Rex (king) of the Jews.

I think it's just tradition. Maybe to avoid confusion with "I" in written stuff.
