Islam is a religion of peace. You have to understand that the verses in the Quran took place 1400 years back and of course, Muslims won't use these on fellow Jews and Christians. Political Bigots use Islam as some kind of weapon and verses in the Quran. The reference of using action against the enemy or what the west likes calling "the infidel" were used only at that time. The Quran is a book for eternity for the Muslims and their Ummah (Community). Qur'anic verses in support of fighting, were for a special historical situation concerning the beginning of Islam. They argue that since prophet Muhammad, was persecuted in Mecca for the first thirteen years of his ministry, he was justified in his military actions in the last ten years of his life in Medina and for the support of the budding Islamic movement. These use of actions were just like the divine commands found in the book of Joshua in the OT, that were specific to a time, place and people group. I respect all religions and faith.

Islam is PEACE. Islam derives from the word "Salam" meaning "Peace". Sadly, especially these days, Muslims by name not the devout use Jihad for their greed and desire. As a Muslim, I believe that the Jews have the right to call its land Israel and rule it but with equality with its fellow brethrens, the Arabs and Muslims. Lately, Israel has been attacking Palestinian Territory with unjust and ridiculous excuses. Now, Israel wants to change that topic and discussion on their supposed war on Hezbollah. I am siding no ones side here. This is by fact. If you want to write a comment, go ahead but no RACIAL or PREJUDICE remarks ever to be said about Arabs Muslims or relating anything regarding the religion to terrorims. Thank You!!!

For a non-Muslim Islam is what the Muslims are. A non-Muslim does not judge Muslims after reading and analysing the whole Quran. So for me what is Islam is what the Muslims around me are. Historical records or Quranic verses cannot justify the deeds of a Muslim today.

Advice:
Correct your own religion and the rest will be OK.

You're right - Islam is not bad in the hands of people like you. Sadly, that's not the case. The majority of Muslims DO take the "fighting" verses of the Koran literally, and it is essentially the original text that suggests such things in the first place. Think of it this way - whether you're Muslim or Christian, you can pretty much wiggle words around and make the Bible or the Koran say, within reason, anything you want it to. True, the people who wrote them had good intentions and peace might have been the ultimate message, and true, it was the society of the time that defined most of the harsher language in some of the harsher bits, but that is what it is. No one has written a new Koran; no one has laid down guidelines of how to interpret the Koran to exclude these verses; Islam has essentially not evolved over the years like the fields of economics, mathematics, sociology, and biology. In fact, for many Muslims, the stricter you adhere to its verses, the better a Muslim you are. (And this is the same situation we find in MANY other of the world's main religions, Christianity included). That religion cannot, like other interests of humanity, seem to evolve with the times - (Biologists, for example, aren't still referring to the writings of the ancient Greeks to discern the mysteries of the natural world) - is a sign that religion either needs a HUGE make-over, or needs to end altogether. I am not suggesting that people sever their relationships to their respective God(s) - I am suggesting that the man-made structures, and ancient holy texts, of most religions, be finally found irrelevant. You can keep interpreting them more and more loosely, but aren't we, and shouldn't we, be on a path that leads us to not needing them at all?

Agreed, though no religion is innocent of the violence.
What many islamics do now is what other religions have done in the past.... use their religion as a weapon.

Christians and Catholics in past centuries, raped, pillaged & murdered people who would not come to their faith.

But nowadays the latest religion to go thru this violent way of thinking have the tools to destroy whole areas of this world.

If these 'misguided' islamics dont stop, nuclear war wont be far behind.

I personally will never ever pray to ALLAH and will never be forced to do so. But then Im more of a Jeffersonian agnostic.

Problem is that in the middle east too many clerics have too much power.......no religion should ever have state control anywhere (of any faith).

I agree with you Islam is a religion of peace, equality and conceives of an egalitarian society. Regarding actions against infidels the message is that all Muslims should spread the message that Allah is One and that we should bow ourselves in prayers for all the good things Allah has bestowed on us. Obtaining guidance from the messages is in the power of Allah and Allah rewards those who seek guidance and knowledge. All military actions used by Prophet Muhammad [PBUH] were in response to overt and covert actions of infidels some of whom were Muslims and others belonging to other abrogated religions.

You have to tell all these things to the other Muslims!!!
And what about the Talibans? Why they study the HOLY Quran for 20 years, 15 hours per day?And at the end they know the Quran and nothing else! And if you tell them: go in this place and blow it off- they will say OK and won't ask WHY!
It's called BRAINWASHING!!!

A little history about the religion of "peace" :

History tells us that the twelve months following Muhammad's death were spent in bitter, bloody battles to subdue the Arab tribes who became apostate. However, Islam continued to grow after Muhammad's death, led by four Khalifs elected by the closest followers of the prophet. Jihad also continued in much the same way it had under their prophet. In 634 the Islamic military force advanced on Palestine and Syria, and defeated the Byzantine armies at Yarmouk River in 636. Forty thousand more Muslims marched to conquer North Africa, followed by the surrender of Jerusalem to the plundering Muslims.

Over one million Armenian Christians were savagely slaughtered by the Turkish Muslims at the beginning of the twentieth century. According to a report by Khartoum University professors Ushari Mahmud and Suleyman Ali Blado, more than one thousand Dinka citizens were massacred in the Western Sudan town of Diem in 1987. The Baptist Record newspaper of November 5, 1987, added that dozens of pastors have been killed and many churches destroyed since Islamic law was imposed in 1983, when Sudan was officially declared an Islamic republic. The Baptist World Alliance newsletter of September, 1987, tells of 130 church buildings and pastor's homes, all of Christian denominations in Kadona State in Nigeria, being destroyed by Muslim rioters. Where does this rampant slaughter in the name of religion come from. It is taught in the Quran as revealed by the prophet Muhammad.

Surat al-Taubah (Repentance) 9:29 Fight against such of those who have been given the Scripture as believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, and forbid not that which Allah hath forbidden by His messenger, and follow not the religion of truth, until they pay the tribute readily, being brought low.

More recently, in a December 8, 2001 Worldnet Daily article by Art Moore, it was reported that more than 50,000 Christians in the Central Sulawesi province town of Tentena were in imminent danger of attack by a paramilitary group called Laskar Jihad, a group whose goal is the total elimination of Christians from the region. According to Voice of the Martyrs, an organization that reports on Christian persecution, At least 600 homes and six churches in Tentena were burned during attacks in November of 2001, and 15,000 Christians were forced to flee.

In Indonesia Laskar Jihad waged a violent campaign against Christians in neighboring Maluku province where at least 9,000 Christians have been killed since 1999. This religious cleansing can be found in all areas of the world where Islam has rooted itself. The quest for an Islamic world, taken by force if need be, still continues today, all in the name of Allah, and as taught and practiced by the prophet Muhammad.
