Linux is not technically an operating system. It is a kernel (the inner workings of an operating system) there are many different free operating systems are based off of. RedHat is just one "flavor" of Linux.
Some Linux based OS's do cost money but only a few. Such as RedHat. The RedHat group did start a project that is maintained by the linux community mostly called the Fedora Project. This flavor of linux is called Fedora Core and is free.

Redhat is one of the 500 Linux OSes reviewed and distributed for FREE, at http://distrowatch.com
I prefer http://pclinuxos.com for noobs, with it's basis being Mandriva, the bleeding edge distro that is a spin-off of Redhat, and gives 5,000 FREE games, applications! There are 309 LiveCDroms at http://livecdlist.com
PCLinuxOS is a LiveCDrom that boots in CDrom, runs in a RAM disc, but, can be installed by pressing the 'install' icon!
Redhat is the commercial version, now, that is mandated for Enterprise Servors. The RedHat distro for home users is FedoraCore5.

Redhat is a Linux provider. You can download Linux free, but there is not nearly as much help, and routines
and other features are different between different "flavors," although supposedly compatable.

Redhat is a kind (or "flavor") of Linux. Redhat is supported by a company and you pay for their technical support.
