If you make it a habit of swimming everyday and practicing holding your breath, your lungs will expand the capacity that it can hold. Eating healthy too, and smoking makes it worse.

Keep practicing- use goggles, hold the side of the pool, and try keeping a couple of bricks at the bottom. If you hold onto the bricks, you can stay under a litle bit longer. It might also help to use a waterproof watch with a second hand. Try to be as still as possible, and to not let out alot of air at a time. The only reason why you exhale underwater is to get the water ot of your nose, so just focus on only exhaling a tiny bit at a time.

Worst case scenario- hyperventilate before going under (breathe really fast, and then take a breath)
Its not entirely safe, if you do it too much, but it can help you to take a deeper breath now and then. Just dont do this if you are going further down than 3 or 4 feet.

The only safe way for swimmers to increase their endurance is through aerobic activity.

According to Capt. John Murray, MC, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, Washington, D.C., taking a few short breaths before going underwater is a natural thing to do. He said that most people who go snorkeling or swimming feel more comfortable if they take a series of breaths before going under.

"It's more of a passed on or learned (behavior)," said Murray. "What's not passed on is the danger," which begins when swimmers take a series of breaths before going underwater. Taking a series of breaths expels the carbon dioxide, allowing the swimmer to stay underwater longer before feeling a need to breathe.

While diving, the levels of carbon dioxide and oxygen levels increase as the depth of the dive increases. As the carbon dioxide builds up, the diver feels a need to breathe and heads to the surface. The level of carbon dioxide decreases as the diver heads to the surface, while the already burned off oxygen supply falls rapidly, causing the diver to become unconscious and possibly drown.

just practice. thru the day, make sure you take longer deeper breaths. and pracice holding your breath as long as you can. your time will get longer and longer. also, taking lots of breaths and expanding your lungs right before you go underwater will put more oxygen in your blood and help you hold your breath longer

Practice deep breathing exercises. It is not filling your chest up as much as you can, it's involved with your abdominal muscles. Look it up to see how to do them correctly.
