Cultural assimilation does not require the loss of fatherland culture. It requires learning the social mores that the mainstream culture holds so that you can avoid offense or the appearance of ignorance in a social situation. It requires learning to communicate with the mainstream culture both verbally and on other levels in an effective way. For example, in Greece and other Balkan countries, the indication for no is a single lifting of the head and a clicking of the teeth. This appears to be a nod of yes to the non-initiated. While Greek Americans may continue to use this form of negation, they would know when to use it and when to use the more mainstream shake of the head in order to avoid confusion.

Chinese immigrants to the US would learn that spitting in public is highly frowned upon in the US and they would probably drop this practice. In addition, they would quickly learn that when an American takes their business card with one hand, writes on it, and slides it into his or her back pocket, no offense is meant. At the same time, they may continue to offer their business cards with two hands and take the business cards of Americans with two hands and make a show of reading the entire card as is the custom in China. They would also learn that is against the law in many places in the US to allow their small children to squat on the sidewalk to pee or release their bowels. They probably would stop dressing their toddlers in split pants designed for this practice.

Generally, non-permanent residents to a country do not assimilate in the same way that permanent residents are expected to do.

Chinese and Greek Americans are very proud of their cultures, as they should be. They often learn their language, sometimes at special schools where they also learn cultural practices. They hold festivals and generally eat their national dishes on a regular basis. At the same time, they learn how to work with people from all cultures. They learn how to meet the expectations that are common to ALL people from ALL cultures in the US. This allows them to be successful, contributing members to their country, the US, while maintaining the things that make them different.

This is cultural assimilation.

In this immigration issue-assimilation would be a blending together and support of certain ideas. Respectfully and orderly.
This is what most earlier immigrants did. They adopt laws. They had one nation language which has purpose. They did there best to obied by those laws. They worked hard to do what is best for this country and its people. They work together in an orderly and peaceful way to see that laws were obeyed for the benefit of the majority. They had a keen interest for the welfare of its people (not other countries). They try to cooperate to its authorities. Their loyalties were to this country and its people. They did not share in disrespect of this countries laws. Nor did they support dishonest ways. They knew that wrong conduct can corrupt good ideas. They knew that opposer to these truth often seek to oppress it by violence or lies. Their lives were not a set of rituals but a way of life-to seek the best for the majority of this country. They worked side by side to build not destroy. They fought together for these freedoms found here. And now have a country many envy. Their laws restrain many who are lawless and were the protection of many. This was a blending of many from all over who assimilated together for a cause. It made a Great Nation.
These laws were for the people here not the world .These laws were not to be divided into two parts-as that only divides nations. History!

Embracing the customs and laws of the country you have chosen to move to. Continue with your old customs that you love within the comfort of your own home and when you return to visit your old country, but conform to the customs and laws of the country that you have moved to when you are in that society. This shows respect for your new country.
