Are there any tiny tanks or cartridges you can use to breathe underwater, even if it's just for a limited amount of time?

There is the mini-breather:

It's only for short, shallow dives though. Here is a review:

You may be thinking of the rebreather gadget used by James Bond in Thunderball, but there is nothing like this in real life.

"Spare Air" makes small compressed air bottles (reference 1). Their smallest is 1.7 cubic feet, or about 30 breaths at surface pressure. It's not a lot.

Similar rebreather systems are made for underground mines; they use a purifier, rather than compressed air. They, too, are cannisters with a "bite" for the mouthpiece, but they cannot be used underwater.

About the size of a ball point pen. But is is only good for a couple of breaths.

There are what are called pony bottles. We use them as air reserves. Very very short time to breath off of them though.

Sure, pony bottles are out there. But you don't breathe oxygen from them! It's air!
