If you read the article carefully it said the total population of dogs for the ENTIRE city is 500 000. They are only going to destroy dogs in three square miles (probably a couple hundred). It is a shame, but with eight people dying in the past three months you would have figured that those with dogs would have had them vaccinated. People with pets in those three square miles will just probably send their dogs to relatives for a few days. They will probably just kill the strays.

I didn't read the story but China doesn't have the resources to care for 500,000 loose dogs. Ignorant people and poor people let dogs and cats breed indiscriminately. People with education fix their animals and control the populations. The only thing they can do after the horrible slaughter is to educate the people, help them learn about neutering their animals. Think reastionally - if you don't have enough money to feed your childrren, would you spend money to care for an animal? It's desperation for many of these people. One solution is to offer free neutering or spaying to every family with pets. How much can you donate? It's rough but we need to stop this overpopulation of pets.

Obvoiusly it has to be the last means. They don't have the resources or the money to check every single dog, or even to vaccinate. It's all easy for us. It's either the dogs or the humans, so get your priorities straightened out. Besides, shouldn't we be focusing more on the starving children in Africa or the war in the middle east where PEOPLE are dying? Jeez.. and we wonder what this world is coming to.

I feel the same way, but dogs are considered property in their culture and as strongly as we feel against we have to respect their values. I live in wisconsin and i watch hunters go off into the woods and kill animals for sport, which i find equally disturbing but at least in china their using humane ways to put the dogs to sleep.
