I'm a black male letting my hair grow out. I'm not a big fan of twist, cornrows, or anything like that. I was wondering if anyone has any good styles. I also wanted to know what would happen if you brushed or combed and afro down. Would it look really nice or at least decent. If anyone has pics of them combing or brushing down their afro, please post them to see if I like it. Oh, my mom wouldn't like it if I straightened my hair so...umm...I'm not sure if there are other styles out there, but thanks for those of you who answer.

That's a broad question because not all black men look good with the same hair style. What looks good on you may not look good on the next man. You don't have to get an afro. That went out with George Jefferson! LOL, but you could start some dreads or maybe do some cornrows since your not interested in just the clean shaven look. Also here in New York, the styles of the 1980's are coming back when people used to shave lines and shapes in their heads. Check with your local barbershop.

Lol... if you don't straighten your hair, you don't have many alternatives besides twists or braids. Brushing an afro into a ponytail can look alright, depending on your hair type. If it's soft and curly, you may be able to make it lay flat by moistening it, applying some styling gel/lotion, then brushing it back with a boar bristle brush, securing it with a rubber band, and tying it down with a du rag or satin scarf until it dries. You can get your hair flat ironed, or go ahead and get a relaxer, or if you don't want it straightened, a texturizer... after all, it's YOUR hair.

you could get a straightning comb from the beauty supply store. it wont be perminant so your mom shouldnt trip. at least to get some of the friz out. there is really no way to comb an afro down, i try with my daughter all the time. better get your tender head used to braids, twists, or some kind of pony type braids.

You could wear in blown out. All you gotta do is blow dry the afro out and put one of those headbands on that basketball players be wearin. My ex wore his afro like that and he looked delicious.lol. Try a pony tail. Maybe you just wear a fade with lots of wave in it though.
