I have short strawberry-blonde, auburn hair. I'm thinking of going blonde a la Marilyn Monroe, but I can't really afford it. I mixed some peroxide with some conditioner and left it on a strand for forty minutes, but there was no effect. How do you blonde your own hair?

11 answers in two minutes! You guys are so helpful here in the hair section. I know you shouldn't do it yourself, but Marilyn did at the beginning of her career. Is there really no way to do it at home and have it work out right, what if I use lots of leave-in moisturiser for weeks afterwards?

PLEASE do not put peroxide on your hair...first of all, it will turn yellow, not blonde and by the time you have reached blonde, you will have no hair left...peroxide is what they use to clean infection out of wounds...do you really wanna put that on your hair??? Peroxide is very acidic and will LITERALLY MELT your hair....if you use it continually, your hair will become a solid gob of goo....you are better off going and getting it done professionally....TRUST ME....I tried the peroxide thing and had to end up getting my head shaved. Oh, and I am also a hair stylist.....BAD IDEA......

you're better off, just buying a bleaching kit. It can cost as little as 6 dollars. Only problem with red hair, is that when bleaching it or perociding it, it turns a brassy orange, or a copper... if not done long enough.

Did you use a 40 Volume Peroxide? Did you use a cap? DId you Heat the hair while the mixture was in your hair?

Those are just some of the things you should use.

Try it again, on a strand, mix the same mix you made, last time, put a plastic cap or plastic wrap on your head, or sterdy plastic bag, heat with a defussier hair dryer with a difusser.

You MUST keep the mixture warm, for it to process.

(Make sure after you do your hair, wash it, then let some hair conditioner sit in your hair, stand alone. and rinse with warm water, after a few minutes. because if you're going THAT light, you might wnat to soften your hair back up)

As far as I know you have to mix something with the peroxide like bleach or a color pigment...

It's difficult to say what to do with your color bleach will work but it's VERY harsh to do your whole head, since your hair is already strawberry you have that red base so try NICE N EASY, I've had the best luck with that color in the past and present:)

Good luck;)

Step 1. Call hairdresser
Step 2. Make appointment
Step 3. Be on time for appointment
Step 4. Sit in chair
Step 5. Let the professional do her thing
Step 6. Great results!
Step 7. Never do it yourself! People can tell and it looks cheap and amateurish.

Peroxide is really bad for your hair so find a box of dye that you think you can trust and use it
