The Gospel of John chapter 3 has the famous Nicodemus discussion on this...Jesus is talking about starting over, completely from scratch, under His leadership and with His rules, norms and standards. How often people say, "If I knew then what I know now, I'd have..." Well being reborn in Christ gives you the chance to learn from your negative experiences but put them behind you for good and all, and really have a clean slate. The blood of Jesus is the best stain-remover there is. Repentance has to be real; you can't just say "I'm sorry" and go on like before. He doesn't expect us to do it alone, but we do have to mean what we say. That's when 1st John 1 applies: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." We are human, and will continue to mess up, but that's why it's best to keep short accounts with God and go to Him when we know we need to.

You are born again when you start to believe Christ is your savior. They say this because of the wonderful feeling of being saved that comes with believing. It's like you're born again, because of the completely different way you begin to live your life, and the new feelings. It's as if you're a different person.

Simply, and accurately:

To start a new life.

To leave behind your former course of action and be 'born again' or start afresh as a true Christian, living not for your own selfish desires.

Rom 6:6 And we know that our old being has been put to death with Christ on his cross, in order that the power of the sinful self might be destroyed, so that we should no longer be the slaves of sin.

In order to accept what Christ has done for you, you must die. You have to die to everything that you cherish in this world, you have to die to sin, and you have to die to yourself. ( because a dead person cannot serve anything)

After dying in this way, christ will bring you back to life, and will breath a new life into your spirit. After being brought back to life (spiritually) then you will be able to serve christ.
