Here is a suggestion and a hint ....
Especially if you are traveling during the week ... but weekends too.
There are a lot of small, but decent, inexpensive motels all along the way on the coast. You should be easily able to get a room for two for under $45. Most of these don't advertise and aren't listed in the online travel sites. I have stayed at many, and while they are not luxurious, they are generally clean, sufficient, and have all the basics.
When you see one along the road ... most are right on Highway 101 ... go in, inquire, then ask to see the room before you register. If they won't let you ... leave! Most will, though, and that will enable you to decide whether its up to your standards or not. If not, you say thank you, and move on.
However, don't plan on finding a room late in the day this way, unless it is october-april.
If you want to make reservations, then you will have to try other routes.
