I know that they are insane little beasties but my son wants one. I've been reading up on them. I wanted the opinions of those who have had or currently own a beagle.

I would not recommend a beagle for a family dog. They are sweet dogs, but their barking and howling, like mentioned above, will just drive you insane. They bark at just about everything. I'd consider a Golden Retriever, a Cocker spaniel which are very sweet...Laboradors are nice as well but people rethink them after seeing how they lead the numbers in human attacks. If you're looking for something smaller, i could defintely help you in that are?

As for Jack Russell Terriers.. I wouldn't recommend those either lol. People get them and end up taking them back or to the pound because of how hyperactive they can become, especially with no one home all day or no backyard. An alternative to that is the Rat Terrier... nearly the same dog, they are small, smart and very loving.

Beagles can be great FAMILY pets. The word here is "family", they should be a part of the family and be with the family, not in the back yard away from the family or you will find the little beastie barking for attention (something I'm sure your neighbors will enjoy).

Ive had my beagle for 2 months, he is 7 months old now. Everything I heard, read, and knew about them before, has not been related to anything about my beagle. Mine is nuts! He doesnt even think hes a dog, he refuses to eat his dog food, but why should he when he can open our fridge and get what ever he wants to eat, or he can steal things from the kids. He is a big baby, and we usually take him everywhere we go, or he will cry and howl. He will not stay in his kennel, hes figured out how to get out of it, and until he gets it open, he will howl. He has also bitten all 3 of our children, and me. Ive talked to alot of animal people though and weve been working on our problems with him. Any way my point is, its not the breed its the dog, every blonde hair blue eyed little boy is not the same person, and I think the same goes for dogs.

In general, Beagles are a great breed. The big downside however, is that they have that urge to howl/bay at a lot of things and their barking and baying can eat away very quickly at the nerves of your neighbors. Anti-barking collars can help but they are not a solution and cannot be left on for long periods of time.

Quite a few beagles also, have the bad habit of eating things that they should not and very often end up in surgery for foreign body removal.

I have a beagle/Springer cross. He looks more like a Beagle then Springer. I knew about all the traits that Beagles possess when I got him from The Humane Society. I made up my mind that I could make him a good boy if I smothered him with love. It worked, we are now inseperable.
A dog is only as good as his master wants him to be. I disagree with many of the afore mentioned comments by other people.

They are hound dogs, so the barking and baying is real annoying. Also, they track by scent and don't stop, so when the dog gets out it will take off until it's good and ready to come home. They are active, so expect to walk them at the very least 30 min a day. Your kid won't walk him, they never do. Watch "The Dog Whisperer" on The learning channel. Any dog breed that is a working dog (hound, herding etc.) wants to be very active. Pugs are bred purely for companionship. Perhaps you can be a foster home for a beagle from the pound and "test drive" before you get one. www.petfinder.org

Beagles are pretty nice for a family, but they are hunting dogs. They have loud irritating barks, wake you up at night if they hear something, and can be obnoxious. I'm not saying waking you up is a bad thing, but they're very protective. In my opinion a good family dog is a Jack Russell Terrier. They are great with kids and are extremely smart.

Hope my answer helped in anyway at all.

Beagles are wonderful. And contrary to what these people are saying, beagles are not noisy and howl a lot unless you teach them. If they get attention when they howl, of course they will do it. Our beagle is such a good dog and loves to cuddle with family. They are pretty active though. But with a small boy, I'm sure they can wear each other out :) good luck!

If you can't or won't get a miniature schnauzer, then a beagle is a great second choice. They're friendly, playful, child-friendly, protective and smart. Easy to train with some owner determination. Good choice. Check your local SPCA or animal shelter for any beagles who need rescuing off death row.
