I think it would be better if there were an an element of free will. An able-bodied, unemployed hooligan could be offered the choice of being sterilized so as to prevent his kind from being a drain on the world for all eternity, being assisted in suicide, becoming a eunuch sanitation worker who works for room, board and meals, being exiled to the lawless wasteland, becoming gainfully employed within a short deadline and staying that way or joining the military.

I want to join the RAF anyway so it makes no difference to me!
But in aswering the question I don't think it is a solution. The extra man power would overwhelm the budget and reduce the effectiveness of the armed forces as a whole due to them having to settle for cheaper equipment to arm more of their forces or they might only be able to equip a small aspect of their force. Think of the paperwork as well, keeping up to date with those skive duty and then the service records of those who do serve!
A lot of talent and inspiration develops at the conscription age I believe and whilst military service may enhance some ideas, others will be crushed and not exploited.
Personal opinion, it works in some countries!

I'm not sure if you're joking or not. I don't agree on any count except that we might need more soldiers.
We don't need to police the world--we need to worry about our own countries. The U.S. and the U.K are already trying to police two countries besides their own and it isn't going well. The situation in Afghanistan is slipping and Iraq is an unmitigated disaster. We don't need any more of those.
Not everybody can be a soldier either and you're insulting the members of the armed forces by implying it.

I would suggest conscription of the over 50's (I am one). We already have life experience and in many cases have already served in the forces (as I have). Why waste young lives who are the future of this country when many of the older generations are both still capable of dying in the battlefield and willing to do so for the sake of their children and grandchildren.

No. Conscription is always backwards, even if your country is in direct danger (say, the US wants to invade Canada). But even so, an individual should be entitled to conscience objection. You might not want to participate in bothering Canada. So, you must be entitled to put your government under bold question marks.

How about drafting the privileged to protect the poor ?
Dress 'em up with Louis Vuitton Fatigues ( $ 1,700, and hand them Giorgio Armani under-arm deodorant spray ( $27 ).
There's such a thing as death by envy.

Lets see, drafting an army of the poor to fight and die to benefit the rich? That sounds like the ingredients for revolution. Why don't we just eat them instead, that solves two problems and they can't come back all trained and armed, to kill us.

Maybe you should be the first to volunteer your services. While you're at it, see if you can get a special position from the chief terrorist, old gwb himself.......
