Demonic possession and mental illness seem to mirror each other in terms of symptoms. IF it were to become an issue-how would one know the difference? Is it a matter of faith alone? Meaning, if the person believed themselves to be possessed, would that make the possession real?

This is a general question and not aimed at anyone imparticular. I've recently read the "real" case of Emily Rose in addition to a book someone purchased for me in Salem, MA on possession. It's just a really interesting topic and wanted the take of others.

personally i don't believe in possession
many past cases like Emily rose has shown that there may be other factors to what appears to be happening .. mental illness , epilepsy etc
you have to also take into account that many possessions happen only to deeply religious people which leads me to believe that the mind has a lot to do with it .. perhaps these people felt they needed punished in some way as repentance
i have also studied cases on poltergeist etc and although not strictly the same as possession , these cases have shown just how amazing the human mind is ..
poltergeist although many believe to be bad spirits or demons etc ... has been proven to be the energy of those present , in most cases adolescent females with raging hormones .. the energy they give out is powerful enough to lift heavy objects etc
through some calming visualisations and simple techniques the poltergeist problems goes almost instantly .. proving that there is no need for exorcisms therefore .. no demons present

Anyone who is possessed is crazy as a loon, but most possessions are not marked by supernatural events- bleeding at the eyes, objects flying, speaking backwards, in Latin or multi-voices.

Many who are possessed like it. The daemon has a home and does not want to take the chance to loose it.

For many removing the daemon only causes more daemons to enter because the individual kind of liked being possessed.

If an individual so possessed not only wants to be free of the possessed but also to come into the light, then there are some who can order the demons or demon's out and there gone, but out of 10,000 such possessions 1 will be cast out.

Yes, I believe it is real and I believe it is similiar to mental illness. The symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia certainly match up with demonic possession. I guess it depends on how you prefer to see it. Demonic possession makes as much sense as the stuff the psychatrists would have you believe. I work with some people who are mentally ill and have seen some who seem to be possessed too.

I absolutely believe in demonic possession. I don't worship the devil, but I don't underestimate him either. That is what he wants most. I think it would be tough to figure out if one was possessed or suffered from mental illness. But it wouldn't be fool proof. I think there would be sure signs of some kind for a possession. I praise God that I have never witnessed this. It would be scary and tough to swallow.

"Spirituality needs Spirits In order to exist." (-- Nietzche, i believe... don't remember)

I'm Mexican. We have a lot of superstitions here. (i mean there. Not currently at home) But Fortunately, i can say i had an education far better than most people there.
You could say that i would be protected against such irrational thoughts, and yet i have "seen" things a little bit disturbing myself, and heard the stories from close members of my family & friends, about all kind of strange events...

Now, or there are in fact some supernatural -or at least just inexplicable activities- or there's peyote in our coca-cola's...

If there are Spirits... it's possible they can cause some effect on the living.

first of all,i think the word demon has been brutaly mangled by holywood,it is a figurative thing derived from dreams,as God sees some people, and it is tru many people like sharmins and wiches can do asstral projection and take over a weaker spirit or a spirit that's taking a nap in a person, but that is more a spirit possesion,i'm not that great at old language translation but i think Paul was more to the point when he said a demon is a false notion which creates idolatry, don't quote me on that though.

I'm totally open to the idea. And I believe that the more faith a person has, the more that person is susceptible to possession. When you have faith, you will open doors to the unexplained. This is the same door that lets you 'speak' with God. Of course, that door can be used by evil to get to you.

Yep, I believe it's a sure thing too, Jesus talked about it, and drove the demons out. I agree too, that if you think you're possessed, chances are you can be. All that is required is a willing participant.

i believe someone can have a break down and go off the deep end as in pycho,a mind is a tricky thing
and if a lot tragic events happen in ones life ,it could lead one to a break down in what some consider possession
