If your vet told you that the worms are caused by fleas, they are probably tape worms. Those are caused by a dog or cat ingesting fleas. Your cat could have fleas without you knowing. Cats groom themselves all the time, so if the flea infestation is small, you might not notice because the cat is eating them when grooming.Summer time is a big time for fleas. You may have them in your yard and are tracking them in with out even knowing it. Treat your cat with a topical flea treatment monthly, like advantage (which can be applied many times a month with no danger), Frontline (which controls fleas and ticks) or Revolution (which controls fleas, ticks, earmites and mosquitos, which can lead to heartworm infestation, something that can kill your cat, and a lot of intestinal parasites). You can also give your cat an oral treatment like capstar, which will kill any fleas on your cat within 24 hours. You might even want to consider having your house treated for fleas, and maybe your yard as well.

Worms are caused by flea ingestion. That doesn't necessarily mean that your cat has fleas...it means that the cat has eaten something that had a flea carrying tapeworm eggs on it. Could be a mouse or a small animal, or even just a stray flea that came in on your sock or other article of clothing.

Just because you treat your cat and your home for fleas doesn't mean that one won't come in now and then.

Have the vet treat the cat for worms, keep the cat up to date on his flea treatments and you should be good to go.

Several worms that infect and reinfect dogs can also infect humans, so treatment and eradication of the worms in the environment are important. Remove dog feces from back yards at least weekly, use appropriate vermicides under veterinary supervision, and have the dog's feces checked frequently in persistent cases. Do not mix wormers and do not use any wormer if your dog is currently taking any other medication, including heartworm preventative, without consulting the veterinarian.

When walking the dog in a neighborhood or park, remove all feces so that the dog does not contribute to contamination of soil away from home as well. If the dog, thus.... is a dog that is ONLY at your house, the chances of it getting worms are rare.. but if you take the dog for walks... as I do.. keep it way from other dog feces that you see along the road side

If your cat has fleas, he or she easily could have tape worms. Fleas carry tape worm eggs, the cat ingests a flea, thereby ingesting the eggs and that's how the cat gets tape worms. Call your vet and get some tape worm pills, that should fix your cat right up.

Well, you didn't specify what kind of worms, but the kind of worms dogs and cats get from fleas are tapeworms. However, they can get tapes from other things. They can also get them from eating uncooked meat. Ok, this part makes me sick, but you hear all the time about how they find rodent hair and excrement in some of our canned food especally things like tuna! Well, rodents usually have fleas and so their excrement will have flea larva in it.!!! Do you feed your cat canned food? It is made with beef, chicken and fish. Many times it is made with bad meat from dieing or dieseased animals. What do you think they do with dead cows and horses from farms that weren't even raised for food. Companies will come and pick up the animals for free, Some might have been dead for days and use them for making animal food! Gross huh? It's true. The cow's and chickens could have had worms when they were killed we all know animal products are not tested as well as food we eat, so your cat could eat contaminated food. Even dry food has animal bi-products. Another thing to think about is many kittens and puppies get tapeworms and other worms from their mothers while nursing. If you have never had your cat wormed, it could have had them all its life. Another thing that most Vets (for some reason unknown) don't tell you is; when you worm your pets, they need to be wormed again in two weeks. The medication will kill the worms, but not the eggs. If you don't give them the second worming, the cycle starts all over again. And remember there is more than one kind of worm. Misquitos carry heart worms. Flys that might land on your cats food can contaminate it with more than maggot larve. Round worms can be passed from mother's milk. As well as cow's milk! I KNOW! Yuck huh? but it is possible. If your local grocery store does not handle milk and meat products properly, worms can begin to hatch before you even get your food home. If you defrost meat like chicken, even in the frig and just a drop of raw meat or blood gets on the counter or floor.........yup, worms! If you get some on the counter and wipe it off with a dish rag and don't wash it off right away............worms. Even after your finished eating, if someone leaves a tiny portion on the plate and it is not washed right away...................You got it! Within two hours food begins to rot and worms larva which are there all along, but not viable will begin to hatch out. Your cat may have even eaten a spider that may have eaten a flea! Hon, there are many many ways your cat can get worms. It really is not a big deal, it doesn't mean your a bad pet owner. Just get your cat wormed on a regular basis like when you get their shots once a year. Remember to ask your vet to give you enough medication to give your cat a second dose in two weeks. It is not expensive at all. Then you don't have to worry about it. Good luck. Hey, it's OK!

Oh, and Devlin, you don't know what your talking about.

Worms are indeed caused by fleas

Your cat may not have any visable fleas but fleas can be anywhere-cat beds, carpet, sofa, other people you invite to your house that have pets or are in their house somehow could track them in, just you opening the door allows them to hop in
you get the idea.

You need to give the cat a dewormer to kill the worms and their eggs. A flea treatment doesn't take care of the worms, only the fleas.

Many things, poor diet, poor health, not enough immunity to the worms, you name it, but by getting your cat vaccinated (getting your cat to a vet and getting shots for it), you will spare that cat a lot of pain and suffering. The shots, at most should only cost you $35 to $50 depending on the vet and treatment available in your area.
