I donno if anyone's tried it, I'd like to know if just getting a splitter for the cable will work as well. I am cheap, what can I say? ;-)

It depends on if you subscribe to cable TV or not, or if they have the cable TV turned on or not. My cable is hooked to my computer and my TV and I get both (TV and internet), but I subscribe to both.
If you dont have cable TV, but have cable internet, then you could try a splitter and see if you get any TV. If they forgot to turn it off, then you will get basic cable channels only.
