Hmmm. Neither are audiophile systems. Bose has done some great marketing so they position themselves as a high end product- but you won't find any audiophile's listening to bose systems.
Also the company that makes your receiver shouldn't be the same company that makes your speakers. Bose, if anything, makes speakers. Pioneer- much better on the electronics side of things.
But an inexpensive Onkyo receiver and a decent set of speakers (figure at least $400 min for a set of bookshelf speakers), then a little more for a subwoofer should get you started. Go to someplace were you can listen to speakers- they make a huge difference in the sound.

Never mentioned a budget, music or home theater or both? But spend half on speakers! They will have the greatest impact on sound.
If its for home theater then a system works good with all the same brand for tonal matching. If it's for both music and theater pick a system with larger front speakers rather than all the same size. Music usually sounds best in plain old stereo with the main speakers producing a reasonable amount of bass. Satellite surround systems with a sub are OK for a tight budget or very limited space but full size speakers up front are far more satisfying in the long run. Stay away from Bose!!!!
Spend the rest on everything else, receiver, DVD/CD, tape, etc..... If She has lots of bank instead of a receiver go for individual parts, amp, pre amp, tuner are all separate, not together like a receiver.
audiophile: stereo nut like me. One who is forever in pursuit of a music system that most closely replicates the original source (an unattainable goal to exactly reproduce said music. )

A non-official description of an audiophile is a person who enjoys and is constantly in search of the best of audio equipment and sound reproduction.
I recommend looking into the entry-level high-end audio segment of the consumer electronic market. You can do this by going to a local boutique stereo shop or shop online and read some reviews to do some research.
Although, consumer electronic chains offer some decent gear at best, but if you're looking for the best, Circuit City, Best Buy, or the like won't offer the best audio gear.
To give you an idea, I got my mom Arcam components (integrated amplifier, CD player, and tuner), with ProAc speakers, with some good cables and speaker stands for about $3k. A very nice, musical entry-level high-end system.
Review the links provided to give you an idea at what's really good. If you need help walking you through your mom's criteria, you can e-mail me, and I would be glad to help.
Happy listening!

There are a thousand and one stereo companies out there, all claiming to be the best.
I think you and your mom need to sit down and (1) determine your budget.
(2) what kind of equipment do you want, for example a stereo system is different from a surround sound system.
(3) Go to a stereo or appliance store and check out the equipment and see what you like, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.
If you want something fast and easy to set up I would suggest htib(Home theater in a box), everything you need is in one box.
Bose and Pioneer are fine companies other major brands Denon,Kenwood, Panasonic,Technics,Onkyo,Sony, etc and the list goes on and on. If you do go looking a suggest that you ask for a demo, see how it sounds, also check out the remote, is it user friendly.
If you any further assistance , feel free to contact me.
