I have some .jpg photos which a friend accidentally altered.

However, the thumbnail previews still look exactly the same as the original photo. But once you double-click the thumbnail to open it in Paint, or Windows Picture Viewer, or whatever application, it shows the alterations. If the thumbnail shows the original unaltered version, is there hope for restoring it? Any help would be appreciated! (Hope that this questions makes sense to folks w/ graphic experience!!)

It could be that your friend's Photo shop or whatever program he/she is using is simply sending the original photo recorded into the program. A misstep in saving or sending the photo is giving you the altered photo. If your friend has an unaltered photo still saved you should still be able to go back and correct it. Worst case, if it is possible, have them reload the original photo from the disc.

It sounds like the preview software you are using has the pictures cached in its database. I'm not sure which software you are using but in the past I have simply refreshed the preview e.g. using the F5 key as well as deleting the local cache.

PS: I would recommend that you cite the software you using, operating system e.g. Windows XP, etc so that you can receive the most accurate advice
