i am in a factory job that pays very well but is boring as hell.i have been there since school.i almost joined in 93 but the money where i worked got better and i met a girl,i have regretted not joining ever sincere.i have 2 children who i will miss a lot if i join,but i hope that when they grow up they will understand.i have sent my application off and see no reason why i will not get in.i am just wondering what the down sides are to joining.

I think the fact that you are single and that you have two children needs to be taken into account. I am an Army wife. My husband & I spend huge tracts of time apart when he is on Operational Tours but not as much as Navy wives. Your children are having to deal with your separation from their Mother, do you really think this is the time to put yourself so far away from them? and how do you expect to move into a new relationship when you will spend so much time at sea? You are also old to be joining the ranks, so you will only have a short career. What then? You will retire to no relationship and children who have grown up without you. I think it's a really bad idea. If you want an alternative career which keeps you near your children & provides you with the opportunity to create a new and happier relationship, what about the Police Force?

Seriously, it sounds as if you are trying to hide or escape your present life and this seldom leads to happiness.
Better to stick things out and be there for your kids. I'm sure in time things will get better. You sound like a good guy and I bet there is a nice girl out there just waiting to meet a bloke like you.

your kids should be the most important thing in the world not seeing them for months at a time isnt nice as i grew up without my dad around much, i should know. as for them understanding they might and they might not as, as soon as i was old enouh to get on with my own life i didn't see him anymore and havn't done for 7years. all surcumstances are different but i'm assuming they are living with their mother, have you though about, the fact she may meet someone else who will be spending most days with your kids, and then you not being around at the weekends or similar and not seeing them for months isnt going to reasure them that your still there for them, they might start to see this other man as their dad. you'll slowly get cut out and not know your kids anymore. we all would have loved to do things that we should have done before we had kids but thats life. just because your single now doesnt mean you have no more responsibilities as a father to your children. but like i say it depends on what sort of dad you want to be. a dad who sees his kids every weekend and goes bowling, cinema etc, or a dad who they see every 6months, a day seems a long time to a kid! we go to work to live not live to work! i'd think carefully as your not likely to have much of a life other than your job once you join.

Sounds like it would be a mistake for you. Do you getbseasick? Is there an equivalent of the Territorial Army that you could try it out first without committing fully?

can you at that age ( no offence) but i know in the Army you can't be older than 25 years old. This may well apply for Navy. Check it out first before you build your hopes up but you may find you are too old.

join the army instead. you wont get a chance to shoot foreigners in the navy. join the TA. as soon as we invade iran you'll be shipped straight out.
