Running on hard surfaces such as sidewalks and streets are bad for your joints. With every step a jolt of pressure hits sensitive spots like your knees and hips. Some people recommend using a treadmill instead.

Exercise is good for you, and running is no exception. The problem with running is that it is a high-impact form of exercise. Any high-impact exercise exerts more pressure on your joints and therefore increases the risk of injury. Also, people unfortunately do not research and use proper technique/equipment: inadequate shoes, skipping warm-up and cool-down, women damage breast tissue by not wearing supportive sports bras, running too far too soon, continuing to run when injured, etc. As a general rule, I suggest regular, vigorous walking to my patients (I'm a BSN/RN). Less wear and tear on the body and less risk of injury. However, with proper research, equipment and techinique - running is beneficial for many.

Running is very hard on your joints. Also, if you live in an area with poor air quality, you may have trouble getting enough oxygen to support your exercise. Try swimming. You get as good (if not better) of a workout but with a lot less stress to your body.
