If I took 500 mg of Ibuprofen for a headache and an hour later I accidentally hit my finger with a hammer,(as appossed to intentionally) would the pain be less noticable? I know this seems like a silly question, but just thought I'd ask.

do you mean 600mg? each tablet is 300mg of Ibuprofen.
As for the pain in your finger...it's possible the ibuprofen could be helping with that (ibuprofen is an antiinflammatory and reduces pain caused by inflammation - which I'm sure you're experiencing some of), but also keep in mind that drugs like Ibuprofen and aspirin can affect your body's ability to clot, which means that it could take longer for the bleeding to stop (internally OR externally). I wouldn't load up on ibuprofen for the pain, as this can make for worse bruising or bleeding. Try tylenol which doesn't have this effect.

ibuprofen comes in tablets/capsules/geltabs (whatever) of 200mg (OTC), 400 (Rx), 600 (Rx), and 800 (Rx). Theoretically... yes.. it will help a little. At does below 400mg, it acts as a pain reliever. At doses above 400mg it acts as an antiinflammatory. In actuallity.... you will still feel pain.
But you should experiment. hit your finger after taking ibuprofen.. and then the next day... hit your finger again without IBU and see if it hurts more.

Initially, no. Ibuprofen is an anti-inflamatroy, not a pain killer. So, the swelling would be less and when the swelling is less, there is less pressure on the nerves and less pressure on the nerves means less pain.

Ibuprofen works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body. yes pain and swelling (of finger) would be reduced

It wouldn't help immediately. The nerves always react more quickly than the medication. Sorry about your finger.
