probably red(auburn or bright), nothing too light is good for dark hair.
use enamels(not sure how to spell it) I forget who makes it but that always works good for my hair.

If you want blonde highlights the only way to get them on dark hair like that is bleach. If you take good care of your hair & don't highlight it often you wont have to worry about much damage. If you're going with more of a sublte look I'd go either with a lighter shade of brown or maybe even red highlights. The brand usually depends on what the salon uses, you don't get to pick that out.

I frost my hair once a month, and have no problems with it. Beauticians will tell you not to do this or that, but sometimes you have to do what you feel is best. I have very dark brown natural hair. So to acheive the highlight look, I use La Petite frosting kit, very inexspensive, I also buy a very light ash blonde hair color, brand doesnot matter, just in case my highlights have a light red or orange tint, the ash blonde will cut the red in your hair. Be sure and condition real good after though, as any hair dye will dry your hair. Good Luck

If you're getting it from a salon, they use what they have. If you're getting it done at home, it's a matter of bleaching out your hair, so that will do some damage on it's own. If after that you're going to put colour back in, I like garnier 100% colour because it's long-lasting. Colour is up to you. If you want natural-looking go with a honey brown colour, or even a red. I like to pick colours that go with what highlights I naturally have. If you want something really subtle, go with a rinse instead of bleaching out.

Whatever you do.
DON'T get blonde. It looks extremely tacky and just is not pretty.
I have hair exactly like yours and I'm getting highlights as well.
I would go with highlights 2-3 shades lighter than your normal hair color.
Perhaps a kind of a dark auburn.
And for the brand thing... your mother's friend will know what to use.

They should have professional stuff there at the salon to do the high lights. You can have high lights done with color if you don't color your hair. I wouldn't go more then two shades lighter then your hair color with the high lights.

stick with a shade lighter, and 2 shades lighter...
keep it subtle, because highlights can really make hair look tacky.
I don't know any brands, ask your mom's friend for sure, she's a pro : )
