As was said before, Prozac doesn't work for everyone. If you are having radical mood swings, going from elated and happy and everything is wonderful to sad, crying, I want to die depression... it works great. The main idea as I understood it was to cut off those super highs and super lows giving you a kind of balance. It does make you numb, and for me for a while, that was what I needed. Then I got tired of not being as 'happy' as I once was, everything was just kind of 'there'. Nothing was exciting anymore. Not that I was depressed about that, I didn't care one way or the other. I went off Prozac for a while, eventually the depression came back and I switched to Effexor which seems to be working quite well for me. Good luck.

Doctors can give you medication in addition to Prozac until it starts working. It helps with the first few weeks. It is also possible that it's not for you. Write down exactly how you feel tonight and tomorrow. If you feel real bad call your Dr.

What is the most important information I should know about fluoxetine?
You should not use fluoxetine if you also take pimozide or thioridazine, or if you are being treated with methylene blue injection.
Do not use fluoxetine if you have taken an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days. A dangerous drug interaction could occur. MAO inhibitors include isocarboxazid, linezolid, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, and tranylcypromine. You must wait at least 14 days after stopping an MAO inhibitor before you can take fluoxetine. You must wait 5 weeks after stopping fluoxetine before you can take thioridazine or an MAOI.
Some young people have thoughts about suicide when first taking an antidepressant. Your doctor will need to check your progress at regular visits while you are using fluoxetine. Your family or other caregivers should also be alert to changes in your mood or symptoms.
Report any new or worsening symptoms to your doctor, such as: mood or behavior changes, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, or if you feel impulsive, irritable, agitated, hostile, aggressive, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), more depressed, or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself.
If you also take olanzapine (Zyprexa), read the Zyprexa medication guide and all patient warnings and instructions provided with that medication.

I take it for obsessive-compulsive disorder and feel better. As an SSRI, Prozac doesn't mask symptoms, but works to correct the problem with Serotonin. Often times once a person stops taking Prozac, their symptoms return.

I have noticed a numbing of my feelings on prozac. I have always felt depressed most of the time. I have social anxiety that makes it impossible to function. I will take feeling nothing over feeling like killing myself every day. For me this is the best I can get. I have had 18+ years of depression by the way.

yeah..it does help me abit to go through the day. especially when i dont feel like myself. It actually does makes u feel good bout urself and somehow it makes me sharp. But the effects may vary for other people.
But i had to take other meds too, to stabilize it i.e sodium valproate(epilim) and lamotrigine(lamictal). Consult ur doc.
i hate the side effects though. I get really hungry and sometimes it's difficult cos i'm the type who always wants to loose weight(i used to have an eating disorder). And yeah..it makes u a bit drowsy and sleepy.

Prozac is supposed to make you feel more normal and less depressed, if it is one that you are going to work for you. Prozac does not work for everyone, there are other things too

It makes you feel NUMB.
INFORMATION:
Fluoxetine hydrochloride is an antidepressant drug used medically in the treatment of depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bulimia nervosa, premenstrual dysphoric disorder and panic disorder. Fluoxetine is also used (off-label) to treat many other conditions, such as ADHD. Fluoxetine was derived from diphenhydramine, an antihistamine found to inhibit reuptake of the neurotransmitter serotonin.
Common adverse effects include anxiety, which is possibly associated with an interaction of fluoxetine with the pineal gland,[13] in addition to restlessness and insomnia. Weight loss, trembling, weakness, skin rash, anorgasmia, itching, and a decrease in sexual drive, have also been reported. Finally it has been reported to cause subsequent weight gain [1].
Like other SSRIs, an overdose of fluoxetine or combining it with other antidepressants can lead to serotonin syndrome.

I take Prozac for severe PMS.
It's not a cure-all, but I have to say, it has made a difference. I still feel evil and nasty but at least Prozac allows me to get out of bed and share my evil and nasty with everyone else!

It calms you down, a little. It does not make you feel better. It simply helps you deal with an issue or problem that is bothering you by making it seem less important; less stressful. Use only for a relatively short time.
