One thing the Bible does talk about is about being equally and unequally yoked (although I'm too lazy and hot to look up the reference). I've always heard this interpreted as a warning to believers who yoke themselves (date/marry/mate) with non-believers. Just a glance through the old testament and you'd be amazed at how many times the Israelites had problems deriving from intermarriage with tribes who did not believe as they did.

Good question. I'm guessing most marriages back then were arranged marriages, not based on love, but on things such as a family's class and favorable societal/political positioning. That way of thinking still is around today, by all means. Obviously, both men and women still date for reasons of prestige, social status, marriage wealth, etc...and "love" is just a bonus. Note the US divorce rate.

Dating is a modern thing. A young women in Biblical times NEVER EVER went anywhere with a man who was not part of her family or her intended. That is part of the reason there is so much controversy over Jesus and Mary Magdalene.

They didn't really date back then...

I feel though that God is perfectly fine with dating as long as we do it RESPONSIBLY, if it's a problem, and causes you to sin, don't do it! &don't date, just to date.

Paul does mention to the unmarried and widows that it is good for them to stay unmarried, but, if you can't control themselves, it is better to marry than to burn. Also Paul told them to not become yolked together with unbelievers.
