Make sure that where you are showing her to go poop is not close to her food. I would put the paper near the door & the food dish as far away from the door as possible. The goal is to have the dog ask to go out to do its buisness. Dogs will also eat their own poop. My Peanut has done it several times as a puppy. She is 5 years old now an doesn't do that at all.

Good luck. They're fun when they are young.

Do you have your puppy in a small space where she basically eats, sleeps and is expected to go to the restroom? If so, she may just have been confused and the smells may have been somewhat mixed-I believe that they need have their designated areas and it should be, has to, become routine.
Also, another reason may be that she's not happy with something that you may have done and she's expressing her unhappiness and lastly, of course, she just simply wants your attention!
Remember, puppies are just like babies and due to the lack of communication skills, they express their emotions through actions, alone and its our duty to decipher the true meanings.
I don't think that your dog is slow at all~
Good luck!

Puppies just do things like this. They are still learning to get everything coordinated, usually if they need to go, they just go, they don't care where it is. Just clean out her food bowl and next time try to move her away from it. Dogs have little things they do before they go pee or poo, like turning in circles. When you see her doing this run her to the door so she can get the idea of where she is supposed to go.

Alot of puppies will pee and poop in their food and water dish.
Thats why your going to train the puppy not to go to the potty in their food dish . only in places where their suppose to go. Good luck in training. Females are harder to train than males.( DOGS) cats on the other hand are totally different
