Well, you can't do anything for him if you don't know what is causing it. However I would eleminate obvious things first, before you spend big bucks at the Vet. If he has fleas or ticks, you can buy what you need to get rid of them, and call a professional to spray your yard. If a dog is infested with fleas, first of all "shame on you"! They almost always have a bald spot right at the top of their tail. This is a tattle tale sign. The reason for this is that all the nerve endings come together down the spine at the base of the tail. Even if a dog has a flea on its head, he can chew this spot and get releif. If his skin is red and itchy all over, it is most likely a reaction to something that he is coming in direct contact with. Have you put chemicals in your yard for weeds or pests? Have you cleaned your carpets with a new brand of carpet cleaner? Put any carpet fresh down? Started using a new detergent for his bedding? Started feeding him something new? If all the answers to these questions are no, then you should take him to the vet. In the mean time until you get him to the vet try giving him some benedryl, DO NOT give him any that has any pain releivers or allergy meds in it. Just plain Benedryl. Give him a childs dose. It might make him sleepy, but if he is sleeping he won't be scratching. Also for some quick releif, mix up several gallons of warm salt water and pour over him. Salt water is very soothing for bites and hives.

At least call the vet.
It could be something in the dogs diet too- an allergy. My dog scratched all the time when we first got him and had white flakes like dandruff...vet said to wait and see after we got him on a consistent diet (he was a stray we adopted) sure enough w/in a few weeks he was fine.

My lab/chow mix had the same problem, in that she would itch the hair off of her back in a patch about 6 inches long by about 4 wide.. we took her to the vet, they gave her a shot, and her hair has grown back..
We are watching to see if it stays, or if we need to do something else, but, she's much more comfortable now.
and, it wasn't that expensive.
We tried a spray that they sold us first, and it worked for awhile, but, then, we ran out and it came back..

Use a teatree shampoo to help relieve his skin. Don't buy cheap dog shampoo! Shampoo him once a month to prevent his skin from drying. If you can't find any dog teatree shampoo, Paul Mitchell makes one for humans and its very minty. I bet he will like it.

Until you can get to the bottom of it, Benadryl will help.
Here's a website with the dosage by weight.
