They kind of have their own language... so you'll understand what they're saying a lot earlier than other people will.. but as far as actually saying words, mine didn't start until she was 18 months... like really TRYING to learn new words. I guess she just didn't feel the need... but now, she's 2 and 3 months and she's talking up a storm. She learns all kinds of new words every day. I reald somewhere that children are capable of learing up to 9 new words a day when they first start trying to talk.

A nine- or ten-month old child will say single words, maybe even eight months if I remember correctly. My son said "kee" for "kitty" then. My daughter said "Ah Ah Ah" when she was calling her brother and couldn't say his three-syllable name. After one they do ask for milk or water, but they don't yet say "I'm thirsy". They'll just say, "milk!"

For some children the picking up of speech is gradual between about a year and two, but some will seem to be saying very little and then all of a sudden at two they'll start to talk like they're 30 years old.

If I remember correctly, at 18 months a kind of standard thing is they either tell you what they want or else find a way to gesture for it or they'll have a word for it that they don't pronounce correctly.

Listen and pay attention closely to your toddler because he/she may be trying to tell you what he/she wants but you don't understand what they're saying. One of my babies said "nip" for "milk". Another one said "harbird" for "Big Bird". One said "namee" for "blanket" Then there was "damps" for "ants".

These precious first words that one must first figure out are the ones we remember long after our babies graduate from college.

Usually around 2 or 2 1/2. But mothers and fathers will understand them sooner than the general public.

This is akin to the question "When is a baby supposed to be walking, or going to potty"

There is no fixed age where they start to talk. Some kids talk before they are 12 months of age, while others have been known to not talk for over two years.

But if you have concerns regarding your baby, contact your pediatrician for advise..

It depends on the child, like mine is autistic and still not talking. All children develop at different times. Get them out and around other children who talk and they will pick up on it after a while or if you really concerned get them into speech therapy.

for short little sentances like "what's that" about 12-14 months but for stuff like "I want to play outside" I'd say about 18-20 months depending on how your child is developing in that way.
