My question is:
What is the psychological makup of a "curse," and why have people come to believe in them, and get affected by them, from a psychological standpoint?
Please, don't answer and just say "Curses are real!!!" Or something like that, I'm not denying anything on here, I just want to know from a psychological standpoint.

It's the same concept as any religious belief. Freud came up with the concept of the super-ego which is the place in our psyche where we believe in a deity or some power greater than ourselves. The super-ego transcends ordinary consciousness or what we normally refer to as the unconscious. Carl Jung felt that if we tapped into the super-ego through ritual we could achieve a higher level of consciousness as a treatment for addiction and alcoholism. If one believes strongly enough that any situation or individual has power over them then in effect they are overpowered. There's been a lot of talk about psychosomatic illness as well, which is still being studied. A curse is the same as a blessing to the person who believes.

Would you accept a simple answer from someone who has a lot of questions about a so called science of Psychology? My answer which is only my opinion it is mind over matter.
Absolutely I admit I know very little but I did attend Psychology 101 and did pass the course. However I gave it up because I could not find a fixed solid constantly consistent standard to be used as a unit of measure. This lead me to the conclusion which may be wrong in that Psychology is not a study of facts, but a collection of variable opinions that change with the wind. If you are in today it is your view and if out, you are set aside by something new.
I found the concept of a two-fold that either the real you controls the whole physical/spiritual unit of humankind or the physical is in control. Both are powerful forces and in a continued battle. I see the mind as the spiritual and if not properly aligned to the creator, it can sure be a big problem to the overall well being of the whole spiritual/physical unit as a whole.
Remember this is just the view of a "NO" and since I am the only "NO" I do know you can guess the value of it. Do have a great day and do smile a lot to chase away the dark magic workings. They don't like smiling happy and/or content people.

Curses work in a few ways. The two most basic, without getting deeply into spiritual discussions are: The psychosomatic "I believe I am cursed and so I am cursed." (similar to how a hypochondriac will believe that they are sick and then make themselves physically ill)
and The social acceptance or cultural norm "others in my culture believe I am cursed, they tell me I am cursed, they act as if I am cursed and therefore I believe it as well"
Curses serve a great psychological release from culpability. A person who is cursed feels that the bad situation was unavoidable, and that the reason for his bad luck is due to external forces beyond his personal choices. The curse once identified can bring hope..since all the cursed must do is follow a prescribed set of counter-spells and wards, in order to expiate the bad influence. It makes a huge unfathomable problem small enough to deal with.
The reasons for putting a curse on someone are slightly different however...
A person who does the cursing feels that they have achieved something against someone who has wronged them, who would have been otherwise unapproachable physically. Most curses are set by people who seek revenge against someone who has hurt them deeply and who would escape their idea of "justice". The purpose in laying a curse on someone else would be to relieve oneself of feelings of helplessness and impotence through a set of actions or activities such as black magic.
There are plenty of societies who believe that curses work (both the making and receiving of them) belief is the principle psychological make up of a curse.

It's the power of suggestion. If you believe in it when someone puts a "curse" on you, you can end up manifesting the symptoms of the curses in your own body. My friend's cousin was really scared of her boyfriend, he was abusive and would threaten her all the time. When she left him he told her he had put a curse on her and her kids to make them become bed-ridden. She believed it so much that she took to her bed and wouldn't eat and said she couldn't move or anything, but the kids were just fine, they weren't old enough to understand the so-called curse.
