I am considering adopting a teacup or tiny toy poodle close to the end of this year. My boyfriend's aunt just came back from visiting family in Mexico and she brought back one of these little pups. He is so adorable and playful. I just want to know if it is safe to buy the pup over there the same way she did because with the money exchange rate it is ALOT cheaper over there...Does anybody know any breeders in California? I am going to compare Breeders online but I just wanted some input from other people who have possibly purchased one in mexico or in California. Please don't tell me there is no such thing as a teacup poodle because I have seen them, and they are not sickly or unhealthy. I am scared of big dogs and I live in an apartment so a smaller dog fits into my lifestyle better. Thanks for any input!

There is no distincition within the breed standard for a teacup poodle. There are toys, miniatures and standards. Toy poodles are any that are 10 inches or less. If they are bigger than that they are considered minature.

Check out the Poodle Club of America website. There will be lots of information on there are far as health issues, things to look for in a breeder and breeders lists.

Poodles are especially prone to patella luxation (whichever size) so make sure the parents have been checked clear of that and you'll be more likely to get a healthy puppy.

Just a bit of advice, treat your tiny pup like a premature baby. Always make sure the temp. is warm enough, make sure to rub her tummy after she eats for the first week, and finally consider buying your pup a harness rather than a collar, so her tiny trachea is not pinched. Best of luck!
