The Old Testament is the history, laws, and poetry of the Jewish people pre-Messiah. It also contains hundreds of prophecies revealing who this Messiah is to be. Here is a list of a few...

The New Testament was written after Messiah arrived and died for the sins of the world. After He came, everything changed. The story is not over, we are still fulfilling prophecy (from both testaments) toward the end of the age.

The Old testament is about God's relationship with man early on, How he "created" the Jewish people and his relationship with them. You'll find as you read it the Jewish people act very much like anyspecific person when it comes to sin.

The new testament is about Jesus Christ and how he came to remove the requirements of the outward rituals that the Jews had, include the Gentiles ( everyone else) in salvation, and make sin a matter of the heart more then exterior actions.

After the Gospels a large portion of the new testament consists of letters written by the Apostle Paul to various christian churches that had formed. If you're really interested in the relationship of the old testament to the new testament Read Hebrews it's in the new testament but addresses a lot of old testament stuff because it was written to Jews.

The old testament primarily deals with God's interaction with man prior to the coming of Christ. It explains about the fall of man and begins to unfold God's plan for reconciling man to himself. Reading the old testament helps in understanding why the sacrifice had to be made, since man could not live by God's laws. Most things in the old testament point ahead to the coming messiah.

The new testament tells of the life, death, and resurrection of Christ. It tells of the early days of the Christian community and gives good advice on living according to God's will.

Both testaments are important and nothing from the old has passed away, though much has been fullfilled.

The old testament is before Jesus Christ. The new testament is about Jesus Christ from his conception to his returning to collect his people in the end times. That is why the Jewish don't read or believe in the new testament because they don't accept Jesus as God's son. But Catholics and Protestants (I am not sure if Mormons or the church of Christ follow the new testament) do follow the new testament. We use the Old testament as a way of understanding God and as history and to find out why God made Jesus. Hope this helps. Good luck and God bless!
