10% is good enough at a buffet. maybe less, if they don't have much table service after you sit down.

Regardless of what type of restaraunt you are at (buffet, or nicer 7 course restaraunt), tipping shoud be on the amount of service performed. I don't know who ever thought that a tip has to be 10%, but that is the biggest piece of misinformation that I have ever heard. Tipping comes from T.I.P (to insure proper [service]) a tip used to be left before the food was even delivered. When you tip think about if this person likes their job. Do they give you everything that you ask for with a smile? One of the big things that I always look for is if I have to ask for a refill (on a drink), then that is an automatic dock on the amount that I tip. Also If I have to ask for something more than once, (ie. napkins, ketchup, etc.) then that is another reason.
Another factor to look at is the amount of time that you take up at their table to keep them from getting any other patrons. if you are there, and tables around you get 2-3 people setting at them, then leave a little bit more... this is only if the service is up to par.
Please, do not take this the wrong way, i have left nothing, or a penny sometimes on a $30-$40 check, while on a $5 check I have left $10 before. It is all relative to the amount of service that you receive, and if the food is correct with what you ordered.
all in all i would say that if you have good service at a buffet and want to tip, then do so with what you can afford, and what you want to tip, do not be bound by the 10% rule.
I think that that is all that I ned to say about that subject, even though I got off on a little bit of a tangent.
Happy Dining!

10% is what I give at a buffet, unless it is a place where I know that the staff are working soley for tips. Then I give at least $1 per person at the table.
A proper sit-down restaurant is an entirely different story. ; )

Yes, it is customary to tip at a buffet. Somebody still has to clear your dishes, clean tables, get you another water, etc. 5-10% would be fine, depending on service.

Most people don't realize it, but the servers that seem to do nothing but clear your dirty plates and bring you drinks, are still getting paid only $2.13 or so an hour, like regular waiters. They're working for tips, so tip as you normally would. If they do a good job, leave a good tip.

Yes, I used to work at one, and we do a lot behind the scenes that you don't realize, more than some regular restaurants do, such as being responsible for a buffet area...

Check your bill. If they charge you for something called "Service Charge" then don't give a tip. At a chinese buffet? hell no! Service sucks at any chinese restaurant.
