If you are trying to determine placement, use Saxon's placement test (print it for free from their website).

If this is for a transcript, yes, Alg. 1/2 is pre-alg.

Algebra 1/2 is a book for students who do not need a longer look at the transition to algebra. Saxon Mathematics developed the 87 book (which is Pre-Algebra) because most public school math curriculum did not provide enough support in their scope and sequence. Should your student struggle with Algebra 1/2 the somewhat remedial 87 will smooth over the transition. It is an excellent series of mathematics that imparts knowledge far better that any other curriculum I have seen or used.

I have taken both classes. PreAlgebra contained a lot of the same stuff as Algebra 1/2 just it was a lot more simple.

If you are speaking of Saxon Algebra 1/2 it is that and pre geometry as well. It is probably more advanced than most pre alg. But it works great my son loved it.
