Gourmet is something that is skillfully prepared with the freshest of ingredients, and exotic foods are closer to delacacies, insects, bugs, snails, worms, snakes, bats, taranchulas, scorpions, rats, dogs, tongues, hearts, intestines, stomaches, (sometimes even animal feaces), etc.

Exotic food comes from other countries and is rare, Like pickled octopus testicles. Gourmet is everyday food priced out of your budget, Meat loaf, mashed potatoes home made maybe 7 dollars. A meal of the same in a gourmet restaurant, $25

My definition would be Gourmet = expensive, complicated status food. Exotic = live squishy caterpillars on toast.

Gourmet is expertly prepared in fancy ways, exotic is made with unusual ingredients or originated in an area far from your own. (Thai isn't exotic if your IN Thailand!)

gourmet is expertly crafted and prepared. exotic can be anything like bat soup (vietnam) dead rat wine (vietnam) some dogs (korea) etc. exotic is more weird than anything else.
