Wedding Photographers are soo pricey. Does anyone have any creative alternatives?

I am already planning on doing the disposable cameras. I am concerned with nice portrait type photos.

You can do the disposable cameras, but you can't be sure that you will get great pictures. Some people do, some don't. Ours were fine from the disposables, but then when I saw them compared to the photog's pics, they were nothing.

I looked at it this way - there are few things that you will have from your wedding that you will be able to hold on to. Memories will fade - in order to keep them fresh, you want to have a good photographer. Those pictures will last you for the rest of your life and then be passed onto your children as well. Skimping on them may inhibit a lifetime of memories. You won't remember if you got the more expensive linens. You won't remember if you had 4 candles or 5 in your centerpieces. But you *will* always want to remember that first kiss, your Uncle Ted dancing the night away, the toast from your Best Man, what your dress looked like, what your wedding cake looked like, etc. And a professional photographer can best capture that for you.

Be creative, have fun, but don't skimp on something that will be the most long lasting memory of your wedding.

I don't suggest doing the disposable camera pictures because the bride usually wants pictures of her and not anything else. I did disposable cameras and a professional and I really liked the professional pics so much better since the disposables only had pics of the same people on them. Your not throwing a birthday party. You are at a formal event. If you want someone inexpensive, try a friend who is into photography and uses an SLR (single lens reflex) camera for their pictures and not a digital point-and-shoot camera.

I live in the wedding capital of the world, Utah and have seen many weddings where the bride and groom are looking around and see disposable cameras everywhere and no one is taking pics of them and that's all the pics they are getting. Those are depressing weddings. Always price your photography as one of your top budgeting items.

But definitely think of asking a friend who is into photography about it. They will usually do them for cheap, or free, and you can even get all your prints from them instead of picking and choosing like professional studio photographers do.

I had a friend who was in to photography do my wedding photos. I also had her husband use my Sony mavica for digital photos. This friend has gorgeous photos of her child that she has taken and I knew she would do a fabulous job and I just couldn't justify how much photographers charge.
I wish I had used a professional photographer. It's worth the money and the day flies by so fast that you need someone who knows what they are doing to capture some special moments. See if you can find a professional photographer who will just do the ceremony. You can use disposable cameras for the reception. That's what I wish I had done in retrospect.

Bottom line: you get what you pay for. After all the food is eaten, the music is played, the bubbles are blown, the tuxedos are returned, all you have left (other than your beautiful dress which you will never wear again or even look at for years on end) is the photography. These pictures will be in your living room for the rest of your lives, filling up your wedding albums and hanging on the walls at your parents' houses. The disposable cameras are to remember your guests, the professional photography is to remember the way you looked, the relatives that will pass away, and the beautiful scenery.

Skimp somewhere else!

Visit www.theknot.com
You can find services in your specific area. They will search for photographers in your area. Another alternative is to post an ad in a newspaper or on Craigslist, saying that you want a freelance or amature photographer to shoot your wedding at a decent price. You can also create your own wedding web page and read tons of articles with wedding advice.

I found a photographer for my wedding who took all of the prints digitally. I own the copyright to the photos (she gave me a release form that she signed, and we also signed). She gave me a CD of the pictures, and I can go anywhere to make pictures and rather than making people pay a fortune for any pictures that they wanted, I just made copies of the CD, and gave them a photocopy of the release form. See if you can find a photographer who will do that.

Your question didn't specify where you are getting married. Where? If it is in the St. Louis area, email me, and I can send you some of my pictures to see along with my photographers name.

Davids Bridal now offers photography through lindell studios... they are super cheap for people on a budget. There are some drawbacks, i believe, like not being able to pick your exact photographer.

Also, check the photography department at your local university. There are students with a lot of talent, who may be willing to do your wedding for just the price of materials, ifyou let them use the pics in their portfolio. Drawback: Little experience

Contact a local college that has an art department. When I was in college I did wedding photographs on the side. It saved the couple money for not having to hire so called" professinals", and it gave me a little money on the side and the practice that I needed.

Hire someone from the local college's photography program....

Have someone take the portraits on a digital camera. List all the shots you want and let your family and friends know they need to cooperate with him/her to get the photos you want to cherish from your wedding...
