I've continued taking vocal lessons. I've been a professional Opera singer for two years. I was wondering for those of you who are in Opera whether you think I should continue with the same one or go to another. You always continue learning of course, but I feel as if I am no longer learning. Should I go to another vocal coach?

I have taken lessons with more than 4 teachers, and I have to say only 2 really helped me in my technique, but you will always learn and improve from every teacher you have, some teachers are better than others... If you feel you are not longer learning try other teachers and coaches. Be careful with the repertory you are singing, be sure is the adequate repertory for your type of voice, range and your age.

Opera Teachers are good, but they are not perfect, they can think you are ready to sing One Role or Aria, but your body will tell you when is the right time, don't force your voice and work always on your Technique.

I would recommend you a Voice Teacher who teaches Bel Canto Technique. I don't know where you live, if you tell me where or at least the area maybe I can recommend you a teacher, and I can ask friends in different states, maybe they know some one good.

Well if you are interested let me know.

Your first answer hit it right on the nose. If you are no longer learning then it is quite likely that you are ready for a new teacher. I don't know who your teacher is, but if they are well connected then you definately DO NOT want to burn bridges. A lot of teachers can be very sensitivie about that. It might be a good idea to take some trial lessons with some other teachers just to see how things work. Ask around for who your friends with great voices study with. But don't waste money on a teacher that isn't working.

I am not a vocalist, but I am a musician. You have answered your own question. If you feel you are no longer learning from your instructor, move on. Only you can decide whether you're still making progress.

Don't worry about stepping on any toes. Any good instructor will be thrilled to see a student develop to full potential, especially when that student winds up surpassing the instructor.

All my professional opera friends all take coaching/lessons. You may just want to try other coaches. This will get you use to other styles and you may find someone else you like better.

Good Luck
