I find it interesting how many "because they can" answers there are here to your question, and theyre by women- and how many of the guys think its stupid and pointless to lie.
I think it really speaks for what the world is coming to. It has been my experience that a lot of women are really only interested in having a fantasy type relationship online, so they try to live in the fantasy. Guys seem to be more interested in finding Mrs. Right online, so they take it more serious.
The only thing more humiliating for a man to be found unattractive to someone he is interested in, is to meet them in real life and have them discover they were lying about themselves.
Times have really changed, because the stupid things that men used to do all the time are now being done by women with the attitude that "guys do it, so I can too!"- which dont speak to the intelligence of the women who complained about the things men did. If women thought men were wrong for the things they did in the past, why would they evolve to do the same things if they thought they were bad? Instead of learning from our mistakes, they are embracing them as if they are getting even for something. Sadly, ignorance makes those types of people blind!
Linda R.- you are a great example to your gender- and above that- to mankind in general!

Because a lot of people will tell you what they "think" you want to hear, not what is real. It's so easy to lie online because you aren't face to face with that person. They can tell you anything!! You could be talking to someone in jail, and they could be telling you they own their own business, they own 3 cars, they have a big beautiful home....etc. etc. Although I know it's worked for some people, I feel it isn't the best idea to start a relationship online. You're only asking for trouble!

I am currently in an online relationship and I have not lied cause I expect the same from my partner, why lie in the first place the person will like you for who you are or not like you at all. It is easiest in the end to just tell the truth and it was meant to be then all the cards will fall into place from there.

I don't there is not good reason to lie about anything.I'm honest in everything I do.I found out long ago lying only causes more lies to cover up the first one and it gets to a point for some people where they don't remember what they have said, creates a real problem for them and others.Once they loose a persons trust it takes a long time to regain it if ever. They must be playing games and not serious or they don't like themselves.

Because it is a safe place... there is no way that the person they are talking to is going to know. Maybe they do this to make themselves look better to the other person. I knew someone (years ago when I had aol) that had taken a picture from a glamor magazine, scanned it, and then sent it out as her picture... funny thing though, you could tell it was from a magazine and not a "real" picture. But, it made her happy (i guess).

i know. i find that annoying too. if you want to be friends with someone online, you don't have to lie. granted people should be cautious, because you don't know who is on the other end. but once you get to know the person then there is no reason to lie. that is just my opinion.

Id try not starting a relationship online. When you're online its easier to hide things, keep secrets, and easier to disappear.

they probably lie because they are afraid that they wont be accepted for who they really are. i dont lie about who i am because i am comfortable with myself but few people are. they think that everyone expects them to look like a model or to be perfect or something.
