Because many teenagers think they are mature and responsible when they're not.

Who makes the determination that the teenager is mature and responsible? The teenager herself?

Therin lies the problem. Maturity is such a subjective quality that laws had to be enacted to assure that the legal drinking age was far enough advanced to assure one had gained that maturity.

We all know the fallacy of that since many of us can point to adults who NEVER act responsibly, no matter their age. Still, society has to give itself a level of protection. It is assumed that most people will obey the law and further assumed that once a person reaches legal drining age, they will drink in a responsible manner.

I'm fine with that. My only concern is the disparity that often occurs between the arbitrary age of adulthood, (usually 18) and the legal drinking age. (usually 21)

21 is the legal age for drinking. It doesn't matter if someone is "mature" and "responsible." The fact that it IS against law should be reason enough.

Are teenagers mature enough to pay the fines when caught drinking and driving? Are teenagers mature enough to spend time in jail for drinking and driving, and, perhaps vehicular homicide?

I don't think so.

I suppose you are a teen-ager and that's why you're asking. You probably hate people telling you this, but you'll know when you're older. At that age, you really are not mature and responsible (the proof is the question you're asking!) and you easily succumb to peer pressure. Plus, alcohol is a pretty strong thing and you can get intoxicated very fast and be taken advantage of, especially if you're a girl. What possible reason could one have to want to drink so badly at that age anyway? It's not like you are a wine expert, for example.
Moreover, physical reasons: your body and brain are still developing and large quantities of alcohol will deffinitely harm your balance, your memory, your liver, your ability to focus and therefore your education. And then most of all, alcohol is addictive, and addiction destroys lives.
Enough reasons for you?

Because if drinking gets out of control, you can do things and say things that you would NEVER do/say if you were sober. The sad thing is, the reason why a lot of teenagers drink is because A. They want to fit in, or B. They want to get have fun/get drunk with their friends. So most of the teenagers who do drink are NOT responsible. They aren't drinking to relax, they are drinking to have fun and look cool, and they usually are insecure. Which is why its a law that we cant. We do stupid stuff when we drink. We dont know why we are drinking, or when to stop. We aren't mature enough to handle the downs of drinking yet. Lets face it, we're all stupid.

Because teenagers are not mature or responsible. That's why we have special laws for them. The law of nature dictates that teens think they know everything, but when they turn 21 they find out their parents weren't as dumb as they thought.

It is just the 99% of immature teens that spoil the fun for mature and responsible teens from getting drunk, getting in a car and crashing into someone else.

Have you ever had a hangover? It's is so cool! You wake up like you have the flu, your stomach is nauseuas, your body is weak, your mouth is dry and gnarly, your nerves are shaking and unbalanced and your head is so painful that every little sound hurts and causes you extreme radical pounding!!!!

Boy, we never get to have any fun!

because even though one may be responsible and mature, peers/friends are proably not. alot of kids...responsible or not give into pressure and drink. so if you are so responsible why put yourself in that position, not to mention that a teen's body isnt used to the alcohol and is probably smaller than a full grown adult and will get drunk faster. also not to mention..hangovers suck.

so dont drink til your old enough
