I know its on Msn... But can dogs really be workaholics??

My A.P.B.T certainly isnt but I know somebodys Border collie and Border terrier who do plenty of work .

Do they do it because they like it or forced into it? Or is it because it is in their breed genetics?

some breeds are work dogs, and that is inherent in their breed and personality, i have springer's, they are not gun trained and i don't do any kind of game hunting or shooting, but they naturally chase birds, will swim for miles in a lake to follow a duck and are on the go for 24/7, we regularly take then for walks up to 4 hours long, and they are still ready for more.. have you tried to make a dog do something it does not want to, unless cruelty is used.. (thus is never ever acceptable) so yes its genetic, but yes they enjoy it too.

Dogs that are bred at working dogs (ie. border collies, hunting dogs, etc.) can definately be workaholics, to the point that it can be detremental to them. It is important with dogs like that to also train them to play and be calm. Books by Jon Katz are excellent for seeing the importance of balancing work and play with working breed dogs.

Strangely , Yes.
We had two ridgebacks on our farm who herded the cattle daily (7/7 & 365).
Out of the byre at 6 am and returned at 5 pm.
On dipping days - (Tuesdays) - they instinctively led them to the dips,3 km away, and returned to our farms.

Both my Border Collie and my Malinois are both on the go all day. They are not forced to run about, they just love to work and please. Its instinct, my collie herds everything including horses. they love life.

Dogs love jobs...and some can work too much if you let them. I do believe it is in their blood for some..most are bred to do certain jobs. Very few dogs were bred to be lap dogs.

It's been a hard day's night and I've been working like a dog - It's been a hard day's night - I should be sleeping like a log.
