Or would you merely take away its governmental support and the institutional bias in favour of theists and let religion fall under the weight of its own inconsistencies?

It dies not with a bang, but a whimper.

Let them have their religion, just keep it out of government, please, please.

Abolishing religion is stupid and would cause many more problems than it's worth. I don't have or need a religion, but some people do and I'm not a megalomaniac, nor is my ego that large. This is a stupid question. However, in the United States no religion should have governmentall support, so I would reinforce that policy. And religion hasn't yet fallen "under the weight of its own inconsistencies" so I don't think it is anytime soon.

No I wouldn't abolish religion, religion serves a good purpose for some. It gives people who can't see hope without a God a reason to carry on, it gives them something more that they need to feel fulfilled.
I am only annoyed by the fanatics of any religion, they are the ones who think everyone should have their beliefs, show intolerance to others, and blow things up to make a point.
I agree with J T about the taxes and I somewhat agree about the Catholic church although I see it more as a large corporation then a country.

Religions are elegant, beautiful, and almost always admirable in their intent. They certainly deserve a place in the world.

However, a belief based in an ancient text (often absolutely incongruous with what all evidence points to as reality) should never be given the same weight as modern knowledge with strong scientific support. The bias of the government and media, even to suggest that there are viable spiritual alternatives to researched knowledge widely regarded as fact (and that "nobody can ever say for certain"), is painful to witness.

If I had the power, I'd keep religions around and in fact encourage people to adopt their more humble and altruistic personal philosophies, but they would have no place in research or politics.

I am an atheist.

As I said on another question, I am a veteran of the US Army and not only do I support "religious freedom," I have placed my own life in jeopardy to defend that freedom.

I would not abolish religion, but I would eliminate tax exemptions for most religious organizations, including "mega churches" that are more entertainment complex than church. And, I would reclassify the Catholic church as a nation rather than a religion. (which it is)

And, I would most certainly not allow religion to be taught in schools or other government supported organizations.

They can keep it, but remove the governmental stuff and I'd just take away the bad parts...like the evangelistic parts, the self righteous parts...all the parts that cause them to not live in harmony with the rest of us.

See that now...most said they would not abolish it...and yet they (some) think we are so bad... : (

I don't think you can get rid of religion even if you tried, there will always be questions about our purpose, what happens after death, what morals to have, etc. I would like to see more people take a open-minded and accepting view of different opinions on the subject, but I think its incredibly arrogant to assume any one idea is superior to another, including atheism. I see a lot of people taking comfort in their beliefs and if they need them to get by, well, who am I to judge? I don't believe in god myself, but when it comes down to it, its just a guess, like every other belief when it comes to religion.

If people want to believe in the Flying Spaghetti Monster or the Great Pumpkin or whatever, it's not my problem. I just want them to stop trying to shove their religion down my throat. Although, come to think of it, I could use some spaghetti right about now ....

I'd abolish it completely. Wars are fought over religion, and abolishing it would do the latter as well. Might as well knock two or more with one stone.

Not at all. Although I am atheist, I understand the need of those who aren't to have a religion. But most of the time they act often like if they haven't one.

Have to agree with Captain Angry. Let the masses have their opiants of choice.

I will say thi much... if religious organizations continue to breech the line between church and state, I might support the abolishment of it's tax exempt status.

incubabe, you should email me.
