I woke up this morning and found blood splatter on my white comforter. My nose must have started a mild bleed in the middle of the night. Would that be caused by a cold temperature?

Hello:
There a handful of reasons that you can have epistaxis (nosebleeds). Fortunately the majority of them are not dangerous to your health. By far the most common cause of nosebleeds are the fact that the tissue in your nose is so thin. If the air is dry, warm air more than cold air, or you have a fan blowing on you while you sleep, the tissue dries, cracks and starts bleeding. It is easy to remedy. What I tell my patients is to take a q tip and put a little bit of vaseline up in the tissue of both nostrils. It works most of the time.
Nose picking is another common cause, although this is seen in younger children (but adults occasionally).
Then there are the more ominous causes, ie. bleeding disorders, leukemia, etc. I think you would know if you had these because you would feel really sick, you would also show bleeding from other areas of your body, ie. vagina, anus, bleeding gums, inability to stop bleeding when you cut yourself, easy bruising all over your body, bleeding joints (which causes pain and swelling esp. in the knees).
Give the ol' vaseline trick a try and if you have any dry air blowing on you while you are sleeping try to avoid that and see if the nosebleeds dont resolve.
I hope this helped answer your question.
Regards,
Warren Shaffer, M.D.

Your nostril makes mucus to entice dirt and crud within the air earlier than it will get to the lungs. Unfortunately there also are fragile blood vessels within the core of the nostril that may bleed from drying out within the dry wintry weather air, or from allergy symptoms or different irritations. These little blood vessels can bleed and it ordinarily comes out the nostrils, however too can simply form of labor it is long ago up and across the mucus. The mucus holds it in location a little bit greater, up within the nostril, however ultimately that bloody mucus reveals its method out, and then you definitely get your quality bloody snot. Use a humidifier in case your air is dry, use saline spray and even vaseline to hold your nostril wet. Don't use drying medications like decongestants, or blow your nostril too difficult. You do not ought to be concerned. You would possibly believe it is unsafe, however it is snot. (lame shaggy dog story)
