To start with, they call it Cabo Verde (cah-boo verrdeh), I don't know the creole language itself, but I know it's a mixture of their native tongue and portuguese (as spoken in Portugal). I know people who spoke portuguese were able to communicate just fine with Cabo Verdianos, so I guess my suggestion is to start there.
