Why should prisoners get a free ride when everyone else has to work for a living? Plus, wouldn't more prisoners come out with valuable skills other than crime?

Most prison systems try very hard. In Georgia, for instance, the inmates:

Grow, harvest, raise, gather, slaughter, can, package, transport and cook the food they eat;

Make their uniforms, shoes, glasses, dentures, mattresses, sheets, beds, desks, etc;

Make and package and transport their own cleaning chemicals;

Do all the maintainence and repair work in the prison;

and very much more.

In Georgia, it costs less than $5 a day to feed an inmate. We use as much inmate labor as we can to both save the taxpayers' money and teach the inmates valuable skills.

Great idea. They could set up call centers to handle customer service for big companies-heck they rip you off anyway so why not actually have a felon answer the phone to make it complete! Much of the manufacturing that has been going to Mexico could go to prisons instead. They could make furniture, plastics, machine tools, golf clubs, bikes, yes and even license plates!

Unions! Anything that the unions would support is not cost effective to do with prisoners. And some of those in prison are a little difficult to supervise.

The best idea would just be to abandon them on an isolated Island, like the British when they dropped their prisoners in Australia. However the only uninhabited continent is too cold.

It is far cheaper to moniter them in cells than in an on-the-job situation. Inmates are very clever when it comes to making weapons, and to hand them farming equipment would be like handing over a weopons cash. So instead of having inmate/guard ratios of 1/1 they keep them locked up, where they are relatively easy to keep an eye on.

Excellent question. You are not likely to get many answers. It requires too much critical thought. My guess is the that the ACLU would fight your idea at every turn.
