From what you're describing, it sounds like you might be talking about a process called "interlocking." In interlocking, the stylist either cornrows or braids your hair in a spiral all the way to the top of your head and then uses a special hook to thread the hair extensions through your cornrows/spiral braid. The stylist can either use pre-curled or pre-braided hair extensions, giving the illusion of a styled full head of hair and effectively covering up the braids underneath. It lasts a pretty long time (usually about a month or two) and usually costs about $150 and up.

Braids and Cornrows,

If you want long individual braids, they are called long braids, you should call a braid shop, most of them are listed in the phone books try African Braiding or Hair Braiding( something like that) , they cost about $150-250 dollars and can last about 2-3 months if you really take care of them and it usually takes anywhere from 5-8 hours depending on how long you want the extensions.
They really hurt the first day you get them, after that its easy to manage, you have to keep them well oiled to avoid any damage to your own hair. One question, sorry it sounds a little ignorant, but Are you African American? If not, this type of style may not work for you.
Good Luck

It's sounds as if you are looking for the latch hook braids. That's when the natural hair is braided and followed up with the extension hair latched into the braids. that was a style that was out in the ninety's. I don't see to much of that anymore .
