Would you switch to HD if you could afford a new HD TV even a small one.

Whoever says that there isn't much HDTV programming available is a few years behind the times. Almost every program in prime time on ABC, CBS and NBC is in HD, and some are spectacularly beautiful. In particular, CSI: Miami, Lost, Desperate Housewives, Boston Legal, and Medium are excellent. Sitcoms, also almost always in HD, are not usually as good in picture quality. In sports, the Olympics are in HD as is the World Series, Super Bowl, Basketball Finals, and many others. At least one NFL game each week is in HD. Only Fox is a little behind the others, but "24" and American Idol are both in HD. Even independent channels like UPN and WB have HD programs, although they are not up to the picture quality of the main networks. In addition, if you have cable or satellite, HBO and Showtime both have full-time HD channels, almost all HBO specials ("Rome" Carnivale" etc.) are in HD. Also, you may be able to receive HDnet and Discovery HD which broadcast almost exclusively HD all the time. I could go on, but the fact is the MINORITY of new programs are not in HD, mostly the reality shows which remain in SD because of production difficulties. In a few years, non-HD will be a rarity.

You can still get HD signals for the broadcast networks (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX) over the air, with a special antenna (around $50). Of course you need an HD TV, but you won't have to pay the cable companies for the channels.

If you are in the market for a new TV, it makes the most sense to invest in HD, because it will be the standard soon. But if you don't need a new TV now, it's probably better off to wait.

No. As of right now, only about 7-10% of ALL programming is broadcast in an HD signal. There is no FCC mandate AT ALL that says that everything will go to HD by such and such a date. By 2009 everything will have to to DIGITAL. HD right now is a waste of money. Wait until there is a lot more programming available and the cost of the TVs and recievers come down to realistic levels and then if you would want one, buy one. Personally I think they are a waste of money.
