College certainly helps in advancement. Seperate certification in that state might help getting you in as a reserve officer to start. If they are hiring they will put you through academy training and you will get certified anyway of course. There are books on how to prepare for it and what the hiring process is like.
Military background is especially helpful. They usually will give bonus points for it in the entrance exam. If you go through the process be prepared for lots of running. Also if you go before a committee and do role playing with other candidates and you are playing the police officer, first thing always ask the "victim" their name and for their driver's license.
The first question they asked me in the interview process was to describe what the guys outside the building was wearing. They were cops in plain clothes. They like it when you are aware of your surroundings at all times.
Good luck.

You can go to a a vocational school, I know you can start when you are in the 11th grade. Here you can in Ohio. Same as a Technical School, I went for Computer Drafting, a couple of my friends went for the police training.

It depends, if you just want to get into it at entry level go talk to the departments in your area. Many will pay for you to go to a police academy if you pass all the prereqs. In larger cities they may require a degree or an equivalent number of years as an officer.

Most department require some college now (was 60 hours...it's been a while since I've kept up with it). Basic academy hours have gone up, too. I went back in '84, and it was a full 18 semester hours, plus the TCLEOSE exam. You'd have to check with the PD you'd wish to apply with.

You don't need college, but it helps!
Off the top of my head, you must:
1. Be at least 25 years old
2. Be phycially fit
3. Complete the testing
4. Background checks, character references, etc!
GOOD LUCK!
